This forum is for the discussion of, articles on & news relating to Nootropics.
Nootropics (from the Greek
noos or
nous, meaning mind, &
tropein meaning to ward or protect - source: Answers.com), or Smart Drugs, are a class of substances which are said to improve cognitive function & protect the mind & body from damage.
They include pharmaceutical agents such as piracetam (originally used to treat Parkinson's & Alzheimer's disease), modafinil (often prescribed to shift workers to help regulate sleep) & selegiline ( a mao-b inhibitor, again used to treat Parkinson's disease), herbal supplements such as gingko biloba, & nutritonal supplements, such as vitamins used for example for antioxidant purposes.
Smart Drugs, although they can have a psychoactive, stimulatory or sedating effect, are not designed to be used recreationally, & although they are sometimes included in the ingredients, should not be confused with Smart Products such as Herbal Ecstasy. There is a separate forum for these products -
Herbal ecstasy and other smartproducts .
Smart Drugs are often used as part of a physical & mental harm reduction regime, & have been noted to aid in studying, concentration, sleep pattern regulation, mood & some are believed to have anti-aging properties.
They are by no means a quick-fix - positive effects can take some time to be felt, as they are often working against years of damage to the body & mind.
