ADHD drugs - dexedrine/ritalin/concerta

There are different pratices in prescribing ADHD drugs, some countries prescribe ritalin first, some dexedrine etc

Where do SWIY live, and what is prescribed there? Does SWIY know what's normal to prescribe in other countries?

SWIM got first prescribed Adderall XR for his ADD, then changed to Dexedrine.

But SWIM actually decide the prescription he wants. When he get to see his Neurologist, he often already know what he wants. SWIM just has to convince rationally the Neurologist to get the prescription.

SWIM lives Canada, it pisses him off that the best ADD/ADHD drug, Desoxyn (least side effects than Adderall and Dexedrine, more efficacy, longer duration), isn't avalaible only because it's METH. *sensationalist on* AND EVERYONE KNOWS IT WILL GET U ADDICTED FOREVER AT THE FIRST DOSE AND TURN UR LIFE INTO HELL!!!!!!!!!!!! *sensationalist off

Some doctors prescribe ritalin mostly to children and adolescents, and then one "graduates" to adderall when theyre an adult.

Perhaps the title of the thread should be changed to "ADHD drugs" instead of AHDH.

Also, darksanity, how does one know that Desoxyn would be the "best" for ADHD? Some people actually get much better responses from methylphenidate for their ADD/ADHD then they do from amphetamines, for example. Also, it seems as if meth has a lot more side effects than adderall/dexedrine, at least for some people.

Straterra is the only thing that swims docs say that they are comfortable prescribing even with proving adhd diagnosis (as a child). They tell swim that only a psychiatrist will prescribe adderal or methylphenidate or dexedrine. And this is the Western US. The funny thing is that they say that methylphenidate has a high street value.. Well where swim lives 1-phenyl-2-methylaminopropane (methamphetamine) is near dirt cheap if not free.. Swim has to chuckle at that when they say they are concerned with it hitting the streets for speed addicts ha ha ya right.....Swim would give a squirt of piss for some methylphenidate. Even though he is no longer a speed addict...

Meth has much less side-effects at the prescribed dosage than Adderall or Dexedrine for the same effect.

Ex : 10mg of Desoxyn will have a "cleaner" and less anxiogenic effect with less side-effects than 20mg equivalence of Dexedrine. Or even worst, 20-25mg of Adderall.

This is probably because Meth is much more CNS stimulating and less SNS (Peripheral stimulation, think Caffeine/Ephedrine) compared to Dexedrine, and even worst, Adderall.

some countries like France ONLY prescribe methylphenidate ( ritalin / ritaline)
for ADHD, and very little of it as its use is quite controversial in this country.
The prescription is done after a long period, only in a hospital habilitated to do so, and is very heavily supervised. Most people of this country will not have heard of methylphenidate, nor of methylphanidate abuse, and amphetamines were removed from the medical codex in the late 1960's.
ADHD treatment is approached from a radically different angle, with stimulant prescription as a last straw, as SWIM was reading from french ADHD support websites.

In the Netherlands, methylphenidate(Ritalin/concerta) is the primary drug prescribed for ADHD/ADD. Even though dextro-amphetamine is a second option which has to be tried if methylphenidate fails, it's extremely rare to get it scripted. SWIM has had a prescription for methylphenidate because he has ADD, but he is now prescribed dextro-amphetamine. He uses 10mg twice a day, which works way better than methyphenidate.

SWIM is in his upper twenties and went to his very friendly doc to take an ADD test since his daughter is disgoned with it. SWIM doc never gave his the test and prescried him 30 25mg Adderall XR (free with coupon) 60 10mg Adderall to try then the doc said next to try if SWIM doesnt like is dex..desyon the doc WILL NOT rx being she said it his state it is on the rader of the DEA.. The doc said the overzealous pharmicists have called the DEA on doctors about desoxyn rxs...Plus SWIM gets mass opaties also..

SWIm checked out the laws, and anyone within the EU, can carry with them one month supply of dexedrine/adderall etc. home from holiday, as long as they have gone to a doctor in the country they are visiting and got prescribed.

Going to France, this would be pointless, but going to a fairly liberal country, and visiting a doc, claiming your ADHD is out of control because you lost you drugs might work ..

Does this count as well if you travel outside the EU and get is prescribed? SWIM is going to the states next year, so maybe he could get himself some amphetamines prescribed. He is now self-medicating with amphetamine sulphate, but having pharmaceuticals tablets would be a lot easier to dose. Does this count for other medication as well, like opiates ?

yes. this counts for "mild" opiates too, and benzo's. Within the EU (Schengen) it's enough that the pharmacist writes a "confirmation". this is standard procedure.

with morphine/petidin it's max one weeks use, but the pharmacist can write the confirmation.


Outside Europe you'll have to send an application to an instance which is responsible for the drugs in your country..

In the western US it depends quiet a bit on the doctor/psych. Swim happens to have a very friendly doctor that is open to suggestions. He went in a little over a month ago, explained his problems and walked out with a 30x 30mg adderall xr script. When he came back the next month and had lost 9 pounds his docter switched to 10mg 3x a day to allow swim to eat. If swim so desired he is confident he could convice his doctor to prescribe him 20mg 2x a day possibly more. However swim has no desire to do that. Althoug the doc went right to adderall for swim. He suspects that had he been 5-10 years younger he might has started with methylphenidate.
