Who should swim see about a possible prescription?

Swim has struggled in classes that doesn't keep his interest (math, spanish, etc.) Swim tried Adderall and had amazing results - but only had one pill from friend to try.

Swim called around to psychiatrists but found that they all would not take new clients until March. Swim didn't speak with all of them, so there are still some left to try.

Swim made an appointment with his regular doctor, but is not sure if this is the right path to go in order to receive a prescription. Swim is almost certain he shows signs of ADD/ADHD, so he's not trying to scam anyone. He just wants to get some Adderall ASAP because he is struggling in classes and by March it will be too late!

Has anyone been prescribed by their regular doctor as opposed to a psychiatrist? Thanks to anyone who can help!

Anyone with an M.D. or a Psy. D (at least in the USA) should be able to prescribe adderall. So a general practicioner should probably be able to have SWIY do a test or checklist for ADHD if that is SWIY's concern, although they may have less knowledge about the disorder as a whole than a psychiatrist.

Thanks for the quick response. Swim was pretty sure that a regular doctor was able to prescribe it, but swim was more worried about if there is less of a chance of it happening through one as opposed to a psychiatrist.

Should swim mention what he is looking for in specific (ie. say to the doctor, "Swim was doing research and many people he had related problems/experiences to found Adderall to help tremendously.")? Would this lead the doc to believe swim was looking to use Adderall as a recreational drug and make him/her shy away from prescribing it? Swim has faith in doctors, but he also doesn't want to waste his time being prescribed another ADD/ADHD drug that provides little results.

Re: Who should swim see about a possible prescription?

I know this thread is a bit old, but swim is going to take some kind of test to see if she has add, and although she might have it mildly she really just wants the script for recreation and for getting all of her work done at school without having to resort to buying nasty concerta from friends. what should swim keep in mind for when she sees the doctor about an adderal perscription?
note: she has tried several different medications (w/o a script) such as ritalin, strattera, concerta.. and they all either make her tired or higly irritable but she has had excellent results with adderall.
thanks in advance guys

Re: Who should swim see about a possible prescription?

19 in Texas, well bear in mind, Texas is tough on meds that are for add/adhd condions. The doc will probably try to put swiy on Strattera, don't let him do that. It is junk. Adderall is good imo if one has the symptioms of add/adhd. In Texas yep it will probalby be monitored and dosages as little as possible. All the meds mentioned are different. Ritalin and Concerta are similar, Strattera, very different because it isn't a speed type of med. For immediate effects either the adderall or ritalin types should be tried. Is swiy going to school and in need of meds? The doctor will ask you and how has swiy done in school and will probably need documentation such as report cards and a connor's rating scale. You get it from the doctor.
