Narguille smoking, best way?

Hello boys and girls. I'm back after a couple of trips around the galaxy... jeje... just wanted to say hi to all and ask a question that has been intriguing me for some time...actually since I got my self a narguille a few months ago [or was it longer than that... damn memory I keep lossing track of time and space]

I've been wondering what the best technique for ligthing a narguille is...

I've noticed that the placing of the holes in the aluminum foil has the greatest effect on the quality of the smoke you get...

I found that the best quality smoke comes from not from burning the raw materials [whatever it is you're smoking...] but from drying it with the charcoal's heat and the hot air that's coming in...

I've discovered that the best results come from smoking with a relatively small amount of material... which is a good thing too...

From that, I've come up with a few observations...

If you make the holes too close to the center, where the bowl conects to the pipe, the air pressure will make a huge hole in the foil, causing some of the raw material to burn and some of it to dry properly.

If you make the holes too far off the side, then no burning occurs but almost all the material remains intact. However if a cap is placed on top of the charcoal while making suction the results improve quite a lot.

If the holes are made along the radius of the bowl, aka not paralel to the edges... so that they reach halfway into the center of the bowl the result is quite a smooth smoke, that feels almost like a steam, it doesnt burn in the airways at all, you have to look at your breath to realize you're smokin, is only a few minutes later that you realize how wasted you are...




That's as far as I've gotten on the narguile optimization... I don't know if it can go any further since its already such a powerfull pipe... but if anyone has ideas on how to improve it I'll like to hear em. [specialy on the grounds of optimizing the amount of raw material to use per charcoal, and the use of reloads]


Now, comes the million dollar question. Is the narguille the way for getting the most bang for your buck on your precious dollars invested in the purchase of exquisite and rare raw materials. Or are there ways that can optimize that dollar even further...

No way a narghila is a good way to save money.
It's just to big. The downtube, the big glassbowl, the hose... all places
the smoke condenses on. You know like a small (any kind of) pipe will
get dirty over time, and you have to clean it? If SWIM has been smoking,
say, Cannabis through such a pipe, the scraped off residue can be smoked
again! Not very tasty, not quite the same bang, but it does work.

OK now back to the narghila, I used to have one, and whenever SWIM tried
to smoke Cannabis through it, it felt like he had to use rather a large amount
of drug to get the same effect. If you want to maximize your bang-for-the-buck,
I'd say tiny pipes intended to be packed with pure material, not tobacco mixed,
like morrocan sibsis are the best, though it's a matter of taste.
Second place: a medium sized glass bong.

Narghilas are nice for what they are designed for:
long (45min) sessions of relaxing and smoking and sharing with your friends..... tobacco that is!
If SWIY really wants to, SWIM supposes SWIY can add MJ to the bowl, but don't
expect it to be very efficent.

making the holes with a small diameter nail is the way to go. In the middle-east the bowls are prepared in advance with tumbak and tinfoil, and then lit ( and regularly attended to) by the walad of the cafe, with a tin can full of embers.
there are two main bowl systems, the male clay bowl which goes into a female pipe, which is found mostly in syria, lebanon and jordan and turkey, and the "egyptian" which is a female bowl going into a male pipe, found in egypt, tunisia etc... if one is smoking ma3sal, ie fruit flavoured tobacco molasses, then tin foil is a must as it causes the tumbak to be vaporized. As far as adding cannabis, one would be better of with hashish then marijuana, mixed into the mollasse and under the tin foil.
if one is smoking dry tobacco or honey dipped 3asal, then the tumbak is made into a little cone, with no tin foil, and the charcoal is placed directly on top.
