Question Artwork In Progress. Want Input

This is a piece swim has been working on in his drug induced stupor over the past 2 days, it's charcoal, ink and pencil. Its far from finished and he really needs to touch up some of the finer details, lines, dark ink. But overall he is happy with it, and the only thing left to add is the water / effects to make it under the sea-esque. However he simply cannot decide wether to add any color, or leave it as is.. particularily colour in just a few of the inch or 2 sized white areas.. any comments / criticism? This is swims first real attempt at anything art related.. he doesn't really know what came over him. He was watching that Air video on youtube that Alfa posted, and after it finished he went and bought charcoal / canvas / posterboard and this is the result. So i guess thanks Alfa for posting such an inspirational music vid. and pls be nice any pretentious artists.. remember I haven't been jaded buy art school yet.
Sorry the quality is not the best with swims 2nd generation digicam...

Re: Artwork In Progress. Want Input

looks pretty good. i think if you used some well-placed spots of color to emphasize certain areas, it would add a lot to the image. the background seems a little empty, but i think if you added that emphasis to the foreground, it would make the image pop out more and would have a good effect.

then again, i don't have any artistic "training" either...

If that were done, then I imagine it would look like a work of fusion where Dali meets Warhol.

Re: Artwork In Progress. Want Input

Yes that's exactly what i thought. Definite bold to fill the background and discrete color.. inside maybe?

*Btw It's been updated a lil bit, just swapped put the older one, the quality is a lil better too*

Re: Artwork In Progress. Want Input

ok updated the image to include 2 more canvas images I did last night With merely japanese character ink.. and no color will be used..and I actually had a little revelation that I dunno how I came up on it.. but when I put 50mg or so of powdered eno antacid into 200ml or so of ink, the result is magic. The ink becomes tighter and leaks less, and has a brilliant gloss to it... heh go figure. So next will be getting a 12 Foot canvas and putting the main image in the middle, then glueing the other 4 canvas paintings onto the canvas to give it a heightened effect. Swim want me to use an "illicit mix" of ink containing over 20 illicit and 15 otc substances powdered and frothed into the ink. Then it will somehow be worked into a image realting to drugs in society.. Titled Not For Human consumption.. I dunno maybe it's a little overboard.. i'm not artist, least by definiton of merit.

Ok heres my first few .. i dunno if any or all are finished.. what are your thoughts? I really have nothing to go on / compare to

i really like your style. but make sure you stay tru to your style. i think it looks great already though. is the picture in the bottom left of all your canvases supposed to look like anything, because at first i thought there was a person in it, but now i dont know.

I want to go to college for art myself although my only real life goal is too design an album cover for a cool indie band.

Re: Artwork In Progress. Want Input

some more progress.. and finally some color! not much but hey.. it's a start

The one with color still needs a lot of touching up.. hence the far away shot to disguise the roughness..

The other was nestled inside an old medicine cabinet with a glass cover instead of wood.. It's gonna be painted black/white on the outside and filled in black with a little white charcoal shading to give it a somewhat 3d sunken in effect... And there's another ink canvas I've done that way get glued onto glass so it's a painting within a painting, open the first and that one is sunken in behind... Keep in mind I still don't know what i'm doing here.. but i'm gaining a lot of confidence, albeit losing a lot of sleep :P

lemme know what ya guys think...

Re: Artwork In Progress. Want Input

I have to say that first picture you posted is my favourite. I will totally give you like twenty bucks for that right now. Seriously. Now. At the very least I think it'd be cool if you could do a high quality scan, don't know if it's possible now that it's more reflective though.

Also, I'd stay away from the colour, and I'm usually all for colour I think the whole black and white thing is pretentious usually but, I swear that picture fits right into my illustrated Tao Te Ching book. Or Fear and Loathing. Or both.

And sidenote... is it really necessary to SWIM when referring to... painting?

Oh and wait... why is the second image mirrored from the first one?

Viewing this artwork depresses me, which is good if that's what you're going for. For myself I can say I'm getting a scarey, uncontrolled, parellel reality vibe from these pieces. If that's what you're going for then don't add color. Nice work though.

An update.. I may have gone overboard.. you tell me.. It will all be gone over to unite the colors / shades more. Which in itself will take forever.

artwork will always be seen differently personally swia like woodman said can see a dali link there she loves that artist personally. yeh black and white is always more atmospheric in swia opinions ultimately thou its up to the artist to decide if color is needed, Swia should up date the gallery too with some boyos artwork he always likes charcoal.

Oh don't get swim wrong here guys, he loves it. Yes Alicia, you are very right about it's the artists right to add colors, but I was just putting in my opinion which is what he asked for. For all I know he could add colors and make something beautiful into something amazing. By the way, nice work Pankreeas on your updates. I like them as they get more complex. Kinda brings a journey along with viewing it.

Re: Artwork In Progress. Want Input

Another work in progress.. a little more direct of an image. Anyways Do you see a person travelling upwards in the predominantly dark image? if not or if just barely, any suggestions to make it more obviously a character? and also can you picture the outer part with all the straight lines as the deck of a ship, and at the top it's being bent by what will be the hands of the figure.. almost like those sleighs with the curved fronts... Thats actually why I haven't added more dark to the underside. I need some help with the perspective of almost making it look twisted. Ok with all that said bear in mind it's still very rough and Like I said the perspective may be difficult to comment on due to the distinct 2d'ness of everything else. I've begun the outline for wings visible on the right arm. Right where the rain stops. The wings are going to be soaking up all the rain.

Any thoughts? or are you already tired of my crappy art? be honest please

What I see is a ship being looked down on from a birds eye perspective. This is happening during a rain storm, and the ship seems to keep sailing along. I personally am not tired of your artwork, I think you have some talent. Why don't you have a local art show after putting a few more of these pieces together.

Plain and simple:

Art is meant to do 1 thing.. convey emotion.. I take it as a compliment that you managed to get a "scarey, uncontrolled, parellel reality vibe" from it.

Re: Artwork In Progress. Want Input

I've actually contacted a local gallery and they are very interested. Expecially the ideas I haven't really put out here yet, but they were along the lines of mixing electricity with art. I have 1 canvas mimicing a breadboard. (http://www.clarkzapper.net/breadboard.jpg) which is what you use to test electronic circuits before you put them on a solder board. The canvas looks exactly like that, and i've poked the components (resistors, capactors, op amp chips, etc..) through the canvas and grounded em through the back, and attached a power supply to light up leds flashing in patterns on the canvas. Also I have another in the works where there will be buttons you can push that will release diff colors / patterns of paint dependant on how much voltage is applied. Very public interactive art.

Anyways here's another thing i'm workin on

here's a Figure when you first look at it, but does the figure inside come out as well? The immedaite one appears to have a hold of something I haven't finished yet. The second is holding something overtop his head and squeezed through a sort of ring around his waist. And his legs in the left corner
