Problems with pipe and smoking method

SWIM was telling me that sie tried 6x Salvia divinorum extract for the first time but didn't get anything from it.

Sie used a small metal smoking pipe with a fine mesh and wide bowl. The shank of the pipe is about 2 inches long - could this be too long? Sie found lots of brown goo in the shank when sie went to clean it.

Sie isn't used to smoking and ended up with some of the smoke in hir stomach - any tips about smoking method? Also, felt very harsh on the back of the throat/top of the throat - was sie drawing too quickly?
