Man who swallowed condoms full of cocaine dies after flight

An Australian who flew from Bangkok to Brisbane has died after a condom full of cocaine burst in his stomach.

The Australian Federal Police said the man swallowed 37 condoms filled with cocaine prior to boarding his flight. Apparently one of the condoms burst, during the eight-hour jouRney, making the man violently ill. He was rushed to hospital in an awaiting ambulances minutes after the flight touched down at Brisbane International Airport.

An AFP spokesman revealed the event at a press conference Thursday. The man involved in what was attempted drug smuggling, has not been named. The incident, police said, took place two weeks ago. The man underwent emergency surgery but died a week later.

A female companion was found to have swallowed 28 condoms of cocaine, and has been arrested and charged. She will appear in the Brisbane Magistrate's Court on February 2nd.

The man, who has not been named, left Bangkok for Brisbane on Dec 20. He became ill during the flight and was rushed to hospital when the plane landed. Despite emergency surgery, he finally died on Dec 27, the media quoted police as saying.

Police investigators said today the man had swallowed 37 condoms of cocaine before catching his flight at Suvarnabhumi.

A woman travelling with him had swallowed 28 condoms of cocaine, but survived - so to speak. She has been charged with importing a marketable quantity of cocaine and is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrate's Court on Feb 2.

The Australian police took the unusual step of releasing grisly photographs of bloody condoms that were removed from the dead man's stomach.

Federal Police Commissioner Commissioner Mick Keelty said the photo showed the gruesome reality of smuggling drugs in this way.d.

'Those who chose to engage in this illegal activity must know they are putting their lives and the lives if others at risk,' he said.
