grinders and bongs = worth it?

SWIM was recently looking at grinders with kief collecting screens and what not and was wondering weather the investment would be worth the the hash worthy byproduct. SWIM believes that grinders are traditionally used on bud intended for rolling J's however he very rarely smokes out of anything other then his trusted waterpipe. SWIM was wondering if using a grinder on large buds would cause any noticable drop in potency? If not he'll pick up a grinder from his local head shop.
