What causes "rush" from the Vick's Inhaler when using MDMA?

SWIM enjoys getting the Vick's inhaler blown in his face as much as the next guy, but he never really understood how it worked and was a bit curious. Is the sensation just a result of the menthol in the inhaler or does it have something to do with the methamphetamine isomer which constitutes its active ingredient?

It's the menthol vapor. A good trick that is done in swip's group of friends is the Mentho Fan. You take an ordinary fan with a metal cover and rub a thick layer of menthol body rub on the fan face and turn it on. It's amazing when rolling, put the fan on rotation and put in the middle of the dance floor >

Pinkavvy - nifty trick!

Here's another, courtesy of Betsym: Saturate a washcloth in hot water, rub some Vick's VapoRub into it and then microwave for 30 seconds - you can either put it across your own face and breathe through it or blow through it onto someone else's face.

In another thread it was posted to use a lighter to breathe new life into an inhaler (PUN ALERT) - but SWIM got good results resurrecting one from the dead by microwaving it in 10 second bursts. Doubled the lifespan of the typical Vick's Inhaler.

The menthol seems to be a big part of the subjective effects, especially when you blow through the tube towards a person's face to create that insane sensation.


It also gives you a rush when you take it in the eye though, and using it normally (up the nose) especially for more extended durations than intended gives a "coke rush" type of feeling.

Vicks has levmetamfetamine which is also l-desoxyephedrine, l-methamphetamine, and levo-methamphetamine. Not much info on this stuff, but some anecdotal evidence exists that could potentially be of use.

On the flip side, this quote from a drug testing service seems to detract from the view that levmetamfetamine does anything itself to add to the E feeling.

The system transfers information through the body, such as:

Efferent messages can trigger changes in different parts of the body simultaneously. For example, the sympathetic nervous system can accelerate heart rate; widen bronchial passages; decrease motility (movement) of the large intestine; constrict blood vessels; increase peristalsis in the esophagus; cause pupil dilation, piloerection (goose bumps) and perspiration; and raise blood pressure. Afferent messages carry sensations such as heat, cold, or pain.

Don't know if this has anything to do with it. Would certainly explain the "coke" effect from snorting it. Normally you wouldn't get effects as the 'l' isomer of meth is practically the opposite of the 'd' isomer effects-wise but maybe the MDMA has synergy with it. I don't think that blowing it on the face is an effective way of absorbing l-methamphetamine however, so it seems the menthol is responsible for the subjective effects of blowing air out the tube onto the face of a person who is rolling.

SWIM agrees whole-heartedly that it's the menthol. The cooling effect works equally well regardless of where you experience it, in either the eyes or sinuses, or on the skin.

But..... SWIM has to admit there is something about actually inhaling on an inhaler - sort of like the opposite of an ice cream brain freeze headache (that's the closest SWIM can come to describing it).

Yeah definitely, it feels like a rather different effect than getting it blown on the face for swim.

He also gets the numbness in his nose that goes with the coke feeling.

Overall its much more enjoyable than coke while rolling, just gives somewhat of a rush feeling like you would get doing coke when sober while coke on a roll may give you a high but it destroys the roll.

This is probably due to the fact that the active ingredient is an isomer of meth. Side effects for the vicks inhaler are somewhat common to the side effects you'd expect for stimulants, albeit less numerous and of less magnitude.

L-methamphetamine alone can raise blood pressure and cause the heart to beat rapidly due to its effects mimicking the sympathetic nervous system, but is not thought to be nearly as addictive or centrally active as the d- isomer of methamphetamine. Its common side effects include muscle tremors and stomach cramps.

wait, its a little tube, which you suck on, and u breathe in menthol right? what do u do? just suck it up thru ur nose, or suck it up thru ur mouth> how are you supposed to blow it onto people, i thought u could only suxk it, how longs it last, does it matter if u suck the tube dry ion one night?

SWIY can't "suck it dry in one night". And it has small holes in the base, so simply turn it around and blow gently out the hole in the top into someone's eyes, nose and mouth. SWIM has Vick's inhalers that are several weeks/months old and adding some heat (lighter, microwave) will rejuvinate.

I imagine the vasoconstriction caused by the l-meth might cause a small blood pressure spike in the brain and also increase oxygen intake by allowing more air to get in through the nose. Though I agree, the majority of the effects probably come from the menthol.

swim has been usin a vicks inhaler on his friends and himself over the last few weeks. really startin to like it. swiim loves the tingly sensation in his eyes from it. would be one of swims top ten things to do when off your head. on friday night when swim was clubbing, the bouncers confiscated the inhaler off swim, much to his annoyance. has this happened to anyone else while out clubbing or anywhere. was so angry over it the next day, had to buy a new one on monday for this weekend, swim hopes no evil bouncer takes this one too. ha
