Cactus Candy?

Has anyone made cactus candy from San Pedro? Perhaps one could make up a batch of mescaline citrate and leave it heavy on the citric acid side, and mix that in with the sugar..?

Anyone with other ideas on concentrating potency?

Re: Cactus Candy?

The HCl salt, SWIM thinks is the smallest form it can take, if one is trying to concetrate the dose.. A simple acid/base extraction, can yield crystals.

Probably the cleanest way to get the HCl salt from the solvent, SWIM thinks is to titrate the amount of acid (add acid dropwise and measure PH), or bubble it through the mixture.

If one uses sulfuric acid, they can get needle-like crystals, which is fairly easily purified, although requires a slightly larger dose (we're talkin tens to hundreds of milligrams only, though)..

These can be capsulized and easily swallowed, or one could possibly bind it with a binding agent and add flavor for the candies, SWIY is talking about..

Re: Cactus Candy?

I've had cactus candy before that was like a really thick green gelatin covered in sugar. It wasn't bad, but I didn't see why anyone would go out of their way to make it since it wasn't really that good either.

But if it contained mescaline, that would be a good enough reason to make up a big batch.

Sample Cactus Candy Recipe (found on web):

3 Cups Granulated Sugar
1 Cup Water
2 Tablespoons Orange Juice
1 Tablespoon Lemon Juice

(Recipe is intended for prickly pear cactus.)

Remove spines and outside layer with large knife.
Cut pulp across in slices one-inch thick.
Soak overnight in cold water.
Cut into one-inch cubes and boil until tender.
Drain.
Heat all ingredients until sugar is dissolved.
Add cactus.
Cook slowly in the syrup until nearly all the syrup is absorbed.
Do not scorch!
Remove cactus from syrup, drain and roll in granulated or powdered sugar.
