Two Sligo men jailed for smuggling drugs into Britain

Two men from Sligo have been jailed for a total of 34 years at Canterbury Crown Court after being found guilty of smuggling heroin and cannabis into the UK.
The drugs have an estimated street value of almost €4m.
On March 28th this year, an Irish registered horsebox driven by Vincent Sweeney, with Robert McGowan as the passenger, was intercepted by Customs Officers at Eastern Docks in Dover.
During a search 25kg of heroin and 600kg of cannabis resin was found.
Forty-four-year-old Sweeney, of Glendallon, Ballitavlin in Sligo, was jailed for 16 years, while 38-year-old McGowan, from Carlton Estate in Sligo, was jailed for 18 years.
