Marijuana bust finds 3,000 pounds

GRAND RAPIDS -- Local drug investigators seized 3,000 pounds of marijuana in a semitrailer brought here from Texas. Police said the marijuana had a street value of $3 million, and would have been distributed throughout West Michigan. U.S. Attorney Margaret Chiara said three suspects, Rene Garza Jr., Jose Refugio Ramirez, and Jorge Luis Gomez, all of Texas, were expected in court today on charges of conspiring to distribute more than 1,000 kilograms of marijuana. On Sunday, police seized 3,089 pounds of marijuana that was loaded into a semi near McAllen, Texas, and driven to Grand Rapids, according to the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, Kent County Area Narcotics Enforcement Team and Metropolitan Enforcement officers. If convicted, the suspects face prison sentences of 10 years to life.
