PHARR, Texas Officials working the Pharr international bridge found 1-point-6 (m) million dollars worth of cocaine hidden in a Mercedes Benz. They also found 2-point-8 (m) million dollars worth of marijuana amid a load of cactus and coriander.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the cocaine was seized Saturday afternoon after officers saw something suspicious in the undercarriage of the car. A density meter showed oddities in the car's floor area, and a drug-sniffing dog helped locate a secret compartment under the front passenger's seat. The officers found 19 packages of cocaine weighing about 49 pounds.
The driver and owner of the car, 39-year-old Armando De Los Reyes of Monterrey, Mexico, was in federal custody today pending a court appearance on drug charges.
On Friday, bridge officials seized about 35-hundred pounds of marijuana from a tractor-trailer rig hauling a shipment of coriander and prickly pear cactus.
After finding marijuana in some crates of coriander, the officers used an X-ray scanner and found 424 brick-like packages of marijuana.
The tractor and trailer were seized but as of today no arrests had been made.
