PS2: Just for a moment, forget that Tony Montana dies at the end of that cult classic movie, Scarface.

Forget that he is gunned down by a hail of bullets and a stream of obscenities in his mansion, and survives. Survives to rebuild his empire and get those who tried to bring him down.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Scarface: The World is Yours.

While Al Pacino didn't provide the voice for the virtual Tony Montana, Pacino did approve the actor who does, and he does a fantastic job in recreating the vocal style of Pacino.

Scarface is an in-your-face experience, with gameplay mechanics much like that of Grand Theft Auto, but with much more colourful language – I lost count of how many f-bombs were dropped by Montana – and that was just in the opening minutes of the game. Definitely not one for the faint of heart.
Montana can also taunt his opponents, filling up his "balls" metre. When the metre is full, it gives him a short burst of superhuman strength. Aiming at specific body parts on enemies, as well, like arms, legs or the torso also earns you more "balls" points.

Missions involve interacting with various people and doing specific tasks on the way to rebuilding the drug empire Montana had before it all turned pearshaped, generally following the drive to A to meet B, take C to D, sell E to F.

Things do get a little repetitive during the latter parts of the game.
Scarface's biggest strength, though, is probably how well it recreates the environments from the movie, and fans will find locations that they will instantly recognise.

While visually Scarface isn't the prettiest game out there, it's functional, but be warned, it's a violent game.

Scarface is a fun diversion through the world of a cult classic – but ultimately, it's similar to all the other open-world, mission-based games out there. It pays homage to the movie, but just don't expect to find anything new.

Out now through Vivendi
