does this drug I saw in a movie really exist?
The movie "Deep Cover" was about an undercover cop (Larry Fishburne) assigned to infiltrate and take down a ring of columbian drug lords. The story takes place in Los Angeles, 1991, when crack-cocaine was at an all time high being the center of crime and concern for police, both on film and in real life. So as he gets deeper and deeper into the buisness, he eventually becomes everything that was supposed to just be his cover. (see the movie if you want, it's worth it)
In so doing, he gains a friend and partner who wants to get into the designer drug buisness with a new product he thinks will send them skyrocketing to the top - a synthetic type of cocaine. They rarely mention or say much about it. I know that - - regular coke is fitted with a chemical variant - its completely legal (or would've been) - adds a smooth "opiate" like effect that improves concentration - would supposedly make you do things better than you did straight It sounds a little like methamphetamine, but its described too specifically to not be an amine of any kind. Is it real? |

Well, synthetic cocaine is real. And real cocaine does improve concentration and you can perform some tasks better on cocaine than not. But it definitely is not legal.
Maybe cocaine mixed with a GABA agonist like phenibut or GHB(which was legal at the time that movie was made) might give you that "smooth opiate-like effect"....but I don't know of anything legal that would do this. |

Synthetic as in chemically altered cocaine or entirely man-made coke altogether?
The whole movie makes you realize thing have really changed since back then. Cocaine isn't nearly as popular as it used to be. Meth pretty much ran coke out of buisness hasn't it? There's definitely a few people still into the whole thing but just think about what a big it was to everyone-politics, parents, teachers, gangs, celebrities, they all thought about coke/crack at least once a day, whether its a worry or a craving. And to think 10 years later there would be a new drug, a new epidemic, and then think back and realize how much money people in the 80s and 90s wasted on crack. |

cocaine use is still prominent. when swim was in high school, dozens of kids were doing it, and he had no trouble finding people in college who did it. he has worked at a production plant with middle class, blue collar people who used it. the media just focuses more on meth, now, so it seems like a towering giant, but when a drug is as big as cocaine, it doesn't just disappear.
as for your initial question, swim has heard of no such thing. perhaps it was some creative license by the filmmakers?? |
