Weird Sensation Before Falling Asleep

Before falling asleep:
SWIM says his lips, tongue, and nose feel very “far away.” Especially the mouth, feels insignificant, about ten times smaller. Feeling the roof of his mouth (with his tongue), it feels spacey, stretched and simultaneously: distant, minor in size. His entire body feels detached, floating in a relaxed state. His mind is dreamy, nearly asleep, but can have full conscious memory of this experience. He says it feels like the dissociative feeling of DXM.
Is this an out of body experience? SWIM’s face seems ahead of him, while his body feels like it is falling; a slight physical pressure.
Not sure how often this occurs, most likely it's usually forgotten. Before SWIM goes to sleep, if he focuses and relaxes at the same time, he can consciously fly around in this dissociated, dreamy state.

Is this making sense? Has anyone felt anything like this before? *While completely sober.
Or … is this just an increase in DMT before one falls asleep?

Re: Weird Sensation Before Falling Asleep

Sounds like you have a dissociative disorder, if it isnt affecting your life just think of it as a blessing that you can attain naturally what others who like to be dissociated have to take DXM or K for.

Re: Weird Sensation Before Falling Asleep

dissociative disorder is actually a term referring to dissociative identity disorder, formerly multiple personality disorder, and is something very different than the dissociative intoxication.

DMT in the human brain is actually speculative to SWIM's knowledge, it has been rumored to be in the pineal gland in minute amounts. SWIM does not think an endogenous increase in DMT would have much of an effect since the amount is so small, and it would not be in the proper part of the brain to manifest global proprioceptive/balance effects as it seems to be with SWIY anyway.

more likely what SWIY is feeling is the transition from the waking state of consciousness to the sleeping state. This state is hypnagogia, and the phenomenon SWIY has described is a hypnagogic hallucination. It can include pressure, a feeling of falling, vividness, occasionally fear and a feeling of contact with another presence. Most people will experience this at least once in some form or another in their lifetime, more rarely it will happen repeatedly, but the phenomenon is not abnormal at all.

Re: Weird Sensation Before Falling Asleep

Thanks for the replies.

And with a decrease in sleep, the hypnagogia will greatly increase. 5-6 Hours of sleep, SWIM claims to feel the effects several times a day; ~40 minuet car ride to work, ~40 minuet car ride home; and before sleep in bed.

Unrelated, but looking at the symptoms (actually, ALL of the symptoms) and causes of dissociative disorder, it is highly in question. Or perhaps Post-traumatic stress disorder. Dissociative disorder- it's new news to SWIM.
Quote:
When faced with overwhelmingly traumatic situations from which there is no physical escape, a child may resort to "going away" in his or her head. Children typically use this ability as an extremely effective defense against acute physical and emotional pain, or anxious anticipation of that pain. By this dissociative process, thoughts, feelings, memories, and perceptions of the traumatic experiences can be separated off psychologically, allowing the child to function as if the trauma had not occurred.
Also, I wonder if the hypnagogia is related to any mental instability that would boost the chance of it. NOT being (the result of/) a "sign of a sleep disorder, such as narcolepsy and insomnia, or associated with temporal lobe epilepsy." I can't find any info on it being increased due to any mental disorder, so this is a far-off guess. But is there any reason to it happening more often other than deprived sleep?

Re: Weird Sensation Before Falling Asleep

Sleep deprivation could be the main cause here. Without adquate sleep, the body will attempt to compensate by going into "microsleeps", which are short bursts of sleep that come without warning and last for a few seconds. Its somewhat like a short-acting narcolepsy. If this is the case, a hypnagogic state could occur around these microsleeps. If this is something troubling SWIY, SWIY may want to see a doctor to rule out other causes.

Re: Weird Sensation Before Falling Asleep

It's normal to "dissociate" somewhat in the twilight state right before falling asleep. SWIM's thoughts become disjoined and relaxed, and he occasionally gets auditory and visual hallucinations (mostly auditory, mostly music). Perfectly normal stuff.

Sounds like SWIY has gained conscious control somewhat of a state that's usually ignored or overlooked. In SWIM's opinion it's a nice gift, but nothing earth shattering... enjoy.
