Re: OTC opioids in America?
Its rumored that some states sell low amounts of codeine in preparations with acetaminophen, itd be similar to Tylenol #1, but SWIM has never seen nor heard of anyone coming across this. Looking over the DEA list of scheduled drugs, it seems like any preparation with codeine would at least fall into the Schedule V drug category, meaning one would still need a prescription. SWIM personally believes that OTC codeine in the USA is an urban legend, but if anyone can definitively say otherwise from personal experience, SWIM would be most interested in hearing your tale.
Codeine without tylenol may be Schedule II, but most preparations of codeine that are prescribed are actually Schedule III due to their combination with acetaminophen. Just wanted to clear that up for other avid readers. |

Re: OTC opioids in America?
It's just as well... codeine is a rather crap high. In SWIM's opinion, kratom walks over it easily both in the painkilling and in the euphoric high departments. Canada really has the right idea leaving codeine OTC.

Re: OTC opioids in America?
A schedule V cough surup with codeine is available fedrally over the counter. But most states (Oklahoma being one of them) have laws against selling it OTC. It depends on the state.

Re: OTC opioids in America?
I feel Codeine holds a very important place in the world of opiates for a plethora of reasons. The 2 i'll touch on are mainly as A./ a foreshadower to the ultimate power and dependancy potential for the bigger guns as you go down the line and therefor a boundary for people smart enough to sense clear and present danger. And B./ Otc Codeine is great for recreational, and even "legitimate" (hrmm I hate that word... let's use "gov't endorsed") usage when you take into account it's use in a situation like holding off withdrawal symptoms.

Re: OTC opioids in America?
You will not find OTC codeine-containing preparations anywhere in the USA. No way. Up until around 1965 or so, one could buy low-dose codeine cough syrups. Then you had to sign the book for these. Then - POOF! Gone. Prescription only state by state until today. One would have to go to Canada to find such. There you can find tablets with 8mg of codeine phosphate along with acetaminophen and caffeine.
I'm not sure what is available in Mexico. |

this may be true at the state level but at the Federal level the law is still on the books that certain codeine products can be sold OTC. But like you say I doubt any states allow it anymore. Texas , I beleive you could until the 1980s. Robitusin AC is the stuff and it is available in Mexico. SWIM bought some in Matemoras(sp?) last year and had no problems crossing through Customs. But be careful it is against Texas state law to bring scripts from Mexico. The Feds allow it the state doesnt...know what kind of cop you are dealing with before you declare your meds.

Re: OTC opioids in America?
Yes, there is a Codiene cough syrup sold in the US without an Rx. The formulation is a CV (schedule V) and purchases require signing of a narcotic exemption log and a photo ID. Also, it is up to each state whether they allow OTC sales of low dose narcotics.
It has been reported that sales are allowed in NC, VA, TN, IN, LA, OH, WV. It has also been reported that it is NOT allowed in TX and FL. As for other states, it is unclear. DO NOT POST LINKS TO OTHER FORUMS! Last edited by Nagognog2; 22-02-2007 at 21:27. |

Thanks for the info incognito, +1 rep points for actually researching a topic before spouting off (unlike certain people who mysteriously reached high membership levels without researching or posting attributions/sources of info... they know who they are, and should be aware that others do too).

Re: OTC opioids in America?
I think you are think of 222's which are sold in Canada. Which have such a small codiene to acetameniphen ratio that you wont feel anything before the acetameniphen hurts you.

Re: OTC opioids in America?
Well, SWIdr doesnt know for sure about the legality of OTC sale of opiates in New Mexico, but he does know that DXM repleced codeine a little while back and has a simular molecular structure to opiates. Also lopermide, is that what its call (SWIdr temp forgot drug name, feel free to correct) acts as an opiate if it can cross the BBB.

Re: OTC opioids in America?
Swim has lived in New Jersey for 50 years and has never heard of OTC codeine - but it may have been true in 1965.
What was available up until Imodium came along was "Parapectalin" which contained a small amount of Paragoric (CAMPHORATED OPIUM TINCTURE). |

Re: OTC opioids in America?
According to the official laws, there are, in fact, behind-the-counter codeine-containing products in the US... like you already expressed in your question, finding one of these states is nearly impossible...
But, even if you do know exactly what state and store to go to buy... you MUST remember 1 itsy-bitsy thing. The amount of codeine:tylenol (and other crap) is SOOOOO minutely insignificant, that you have a better chance of killing yourself with a toxic overdose of other junk mixed in there. All while you're just trying to get a 50-100mg codeine dose. Not to mention the paperwork... This is not worth pursuing at ALL! just ask any of the 10's of 1,000's of australians with glomerular sclerotic renal disease and permanent kidney failure... they will probably tell you that dialysis 3x/week is NOT worth a 1/2-ass codeine dose! To these people, just mention of the words "Codeine" or "Paracetemol" will make them cring with horror! Dick (by the way, hello FORUM! It has been a LONG, LONG, LOOOONG TIME! All is well here... hope everyone is doing well.)
