Discuss your favorite music genres

Hello drugs-forum, I'm new here and I like this place. Just trying to get to know what type of music you generally listen to. I've been into "hip-hop" for a few years but lately I just got bored with it so I started listening to drum&bass on internet radio and that lead to a rediscovery of punk rock and modern/alternative rock. I think it was a nice break from the hip-hop mode I was stuck in, but now I've started going back and enjoying hip hop again, as well as rock, and a little d&b. I guess long story short, variety is a good thing. What types of music do you most prefer?

Re: Discuss your favorite music genres

Yea I agree with you. Gangsta rap gets real old real fast. I'm more into hip-hop for the beat aspect and the rhymes, not the hardcore gangsta stuff. I don't like much dance music either (besides drum&bass if that counts because I like the bass sounds and weird noises).

Re: Discuss your favorite music genres

I sometimes enjoy gangsta rap songs or songs about bling bling because of it's entertainment value. I don't take their words literally. It's more like a script out of a movie. They're portraying a character, like an actor would on screen. It would be really foolish for gangsta rappers to talk about killing or dealing if they really did that stuff.

Prog rock, man, you need to open your minds to prog rock.

albums to download

Thick As A Brick: Jethro Tull
Doremi Fasol Latido: Hawkwind
In The Court Of The Crimson King: King Crimson

that should get you started, if you like listening to songs while on drugs, you'll love prog rock, seriously, i'm not going to try to put it into words.

Thick as a Brick, what an album! SWIM's dad made him discover it when he played his old vinyl, SWIM liked it right away and made sure to make it part of his collection. Quite enjoyable after smoking a fat one too

I like Opeth if you can class them as Prog rock which some do. I like grunge music too, I like some heavy metal also, reggae, classic rock, goa trance and some dance.

Anything but gangsta rap like many said. Must gangsta rap artists they perform well and are talented but the lyrics annoy me a lot but it's a matter of opinion

Re: Discuss your favorite music genres

Prog rock is my favourite music genre also. The genre itself is a very wide one, basically anything which incorporates intricate rock music with reflective lyrics, often with many interchanging musical sequences in a given song. One band which could be described as prog is Pink Floyd, another is Rush, another is Jethro Tull, Yes, Hawkwind, Genesis, Tool, Van Der Graaf Generator etc; yet these bands sound very different in obvious musical structure. US Prog is mainly influenced from early rock bands, many psychedelia bands, many early UK prog acts were inspired by classical music fused with rock instruments. This is only a very brief, inconclusive synopsis of the genre as a whole though.

Re: Discuss your favorite music genres

It is a pretty huge spectrum, i suppose i said it was so small because when i think "prog rock", i don't think Rush or Genesis, and I don't think Hawkwind after 1973/4, the same goes for Yes (with th exception of tales from topographic oceans). It seems to me that it's very easy to get too pretentious, and that's what happened IMHO, to everyone. Part of the reason I think Tull are so excellent is because they jumped off the sinking ship and got into weirder shit, Minstrel in the Gallery was pretty pretentious and proggy, but if you compare them to the way Yes and Hawkwind went...

The thought of rick wakeman in a cape makes me want to projectile vomit blood.

I don't think Tull necessarily avoided the post mid-70's pitfalls that Yes and Hawkwind fell into. I'm a huge Tull fan but I felt that their 1976 album Too Old To Rock 'N' Roll: Too Young To Die! was a major move away from prog and a move into folk rock, something which they never mastered. I haven't heard any of their stuff recorded after 1980 but I doubt I'm missing much. If anything I love their early jazzy blues stuff just as much as their prog rock prime.

Hawkwind are possibly my favourite band. Strangely enough, I'm one of the few Hawkwind fans that recognise some of their post-70's stuff. 1985's Chronicle Of The Black Sword is a great album IMO, I haven't listened to any of their albums after that.

My favorite genre is METAL. Cradle Of Filth, Dimmu Borgir, Children Of Bodom, and Opeth is nice, too.

Alternative Rock like HIM (and some songs by SOAD) is OK too.

Used to listen to hiphop/rap too, but after a time I finally realized that it was awfully superficial (read Trebor's 2nd post). So I switched to rock.

That sentence made my heart skip a beat. Heavy Horses and Songs From the Wood IMExtremelyHO are the greatest folk rock albums ever made, Fairport Convention (who i love, coincidentally) never came close to those two albums. They're so original, no folk rock ever has the integrity and depth that those two albums have, and i don't think it could have happened if they hadn't come from a band that were experts in the field of prog and the concept album first.

The reason i think Tull did miss the pitfalls hawkwind and yes fell into is that they changed, they did the folk thing, they tried the heavy rock thing, and kept the meaning and artistic integrity that their prog rock work had. Yes and to an only slightly lesser extent, Hawkwind did nothing of the sort, they took what they were doing and took it further, make every album 14 disks long, bring in another 5 synthesizers and make sure that there isn't a single lyric you can understand untill the 400th time you've played the album from beginning to end.

Tull and Crimson were the most pretentious bands i've ever heard, they took themselves so seriously it was almost laughable, but there was a point to it, the same from Yes and Hawkwind in the early days. Yes after '73 were just out to make people go "wooow, isn't that really complicated and intellectual?" not to actually put anything across, not because they thought it was worth doing, but because they were good at making things very long and very complicated. That's how it seems to me, either because i'm right or because the sheer OTTness of it all made me incapable of seeing what they were trying to achieve, and maybe they did achieve it, but i never knew what it was.

Too Young To Rock 'N' Roll, Songs From The Wood and Heavy Horses represent the decline of Tull to me. Yes, the later two are better, but I don't think they ever captured the magic of their earlier stuff in them. I guess it's hard to appreciate them personally due to the fact that I was blown away by their first 5-6 albums.

No, they didn't capture the magic of their earlier stuff. This Was dosen't do anything to me, there's a magic that's in stand up and benefit and their singles around that time, and to an extent, aqualung. Aqualung, brick and passion play have a totally different type of magic, and warchild and minstrel were another kind. Too old to rocknroll is good but i agree with you, not special like most tull is special. but songs from the wood, heavy horses and stormwatch are just fucking gorgeous, in a way that relates incredibly losely to brick and passion play, and i don't think at all relates to anything from 68-71 or 74-76. If you're expecting concept albums and the technical intricacies at their proggy best, or if you're expecting groovy drum and bass and screeching guitar of pre71 tull, well you won't get any of it.

Their folk phase was probably horrible if you're too aware of the synthesisers and the country gentleman image he tried and failed to make cool. But they were meant as folk rock albums from the mid 70s, and if you take them like that, they're gorgeous.

Prog rock isn't that. I've never heard of one of those bands. Bands like ELP, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Atomic Rooster represent prog rock to me. Are you sure you're not talking about some other genre or a sub-genre within prog rock? It's a wide field.

Ok here's one for you, kids. Jazz Fusion.

I'd recommend Bitches Brew my miles davis and heavy weather by weather report and anything by jaco pastorius, having said that, my knowledge of the genre is still pretty limited.

I'm not going to say the word "trippy", i'm trying to cut down.

Editted to add: If we're getting towards jazz, we're getting towards funk. Everyone needs to listen to Funkadelic (the later in their career the better), Bootsie Collins but most of all: George Clinton and the P-Funk All-Stars.

Make my funk the P-Funk
I wants ta get funked-up
