Spoiled Mushroom Honey
hello hello!
i have a question for you all... something stange has happened with my honey this year.. i put fresh picked goldtops in honey (think i crammed too many in, there was more mushrooms in there than honey!) anyway, they have been sitting there for a couple of months. when i opened the jar recently some white vapour came out, which (leaving aside the hypothesis of it being the ghosts of mushrooms), i can only assume was some kind of fungal spore... the whole concoction smells a little fermented... i am confused because isn't honey antibacterial?? do you think it is still safe to eat?? ![]() light and lunacy, spikyfairy |

Re: preserving in honey: question
Honey is antibacterial, and other organisms cannot grow it because it has low water content. However, when you add fresh mushrooms to the honey you also raise the water content, and it sounds like you added a disproportional amount of fresh mushrooms. My guess is you introduced enough water to allow yeast to start growing. They are probably rotten dude.
SWIM is dreaming of trying the honey thing with dried mushrooms, he'll leave a post. |

Re: preserving in honey: question
hmmm.. yes that makes sense, the water content, didn't think of that...
SWIM was hoping to save these for summer festivities, but is now concerned eating them would cause at least some nasty stomach symptoms. what do other peeps think? they're not, like, mouldy and the honey has been topped up. thanks for the input guys ![]() PS. There wouldn't be much point (in my opinion) doing the honey thing with dried mushrooms, as the idea is to preserve them and dried ones keep anyway.. although maybe it would help preserve some psilocybin content if the plan was to keep them for a very long time... |

Re: preserving in honey: question
Swim would dry the mushrooms under a fan, at least to near crispness, before adding them to honey, or else swiy will get some nasty fermenting.. Swim wouldn't eat it...

Re: preserving magic mushrooms in honey: question
Note that honey breaks down in to an alchol...which gives you the opposite effect of mushrooms.
my buddy Terence McKenna told me that! |

Re: preserving magic mushrooms in honey: question
Fresh magic mushrooms gone bad? I would throw it away. Those bacteria are extremely nasty.

Hi There,
I'll start off by saying that Im new to this forum and don't where else to ask such a question. All SWIM knows about the mush is that is was hydro and good. SWIM read a thing about a year ago about putting some ground up mush in honey and letting sit for a month or so. So he decided to put 14 grams or so into a fair size jar of honey. SWIM thinks it was a bit to much cuz some of the mush blended with the honey but some remained floating. Well SWIM forgot about it, and as he's packing up to move right now, he found the jar, its very dark brown now, and well he needs to know if its edible? or deadly? Could anyone help? It has been in the dark for a year and still has some mush floating at the top. Last edited by Phungushead; 31-12-2006 at 05:59. Reason: SWIM |

I wouldn't. But then I have rules about eating things left to rot.

Re: 1yr old MushHoney
If the shrooms were dry when they were put in, then it's probably okay, but if one used fresh mushrooms, then it may have fermented.. What are hydro shrooms, BTW? SWIM would suggest starting with a couple spoonfuls of honey in some tea or on toast, and see how it does.. If it smells funny or has water in it, SWIY should probably get rid of it..

Re: 1yr old MushHoney
Swim thinks the original poster got the whole idea of shrooms and honey confused. A few years ago, swim remembered hearing the same thing about the honey and shrooms.
Swim thinks somewhere along the was shroom cultivation and shroom storage got mixed up. The only reasonable us for honey is for a liquid culture to grow shrooms |

Re: 1yr old MushHoney
Honey is a wonderful natural preservative.. One can take dried shrooms and place them in the honey for a long period of time, sometimes referred to as "blue"honey.. Anyways, the psilocin and psilocybin in the mushrooms leaches into the honey.. The pieces of mushrooms almost taste like candy, or one can filter them out if they dislike the chunks.. However, this will preserve the potency of the "magic" for a very long time, plus makes it much easier to ingest shrooms to those who severely dislike the taste.. A scoop in morning tea or on some toast can make the day much more fun... Using fresh mushrooms, will cause the water and honey to separate and ferment, though, which could allow some bacteria to grow, so only dried shrooms should be used, unless one wishes to pour off the water frequently and make sure no fermentation occurs..

Thanks for the info! This sounds great! Is it best to break the the shrooms up, possibly into a powder and then filter? How long does it take for the psilocin and psilocybin to leech out? |

Re: 1yr old MushHoney
SWIM uses this method most of the time. He cuts them up a little bit but not into powder. It would be ok to do so but a mush chip soaked in honey isnt all that bad. He isnt sure on the soaking time. Most of the time for SWIM its been a mouth or more of soaking when the honey is consumed. It would be nice to find out if the time could be shorter.

Re: 1yr old MushHoney
A lot of SWIM's powder up the mushrooms before putting them in the honey,
but this one doesn't. It doesn't really seem to make much of a difference. About 7g dried p. cubensis in honey... yum yum: mush08.jpg SWIM usually let them soak for at least 2-3 months... although SWIM doesn't really use this method much at all... |
