make mad bongs. buy a dremel. go to work. its real fun for a few months...never has being an engineer felt so productive...

bottom-less bong:
1) take a length of clear, adequately sized PVC, 2.5' long. 2)put a blocker, dividing it into two chambers, about 1/4 of the way up the pipe. the bottom chamber is the smaller on. get it?
3)take the screw-off head of a crappy head-shop piece. drill the hole in the bottom chamber. screw bowl onto bong.
4)take 12 inches of 3/4" rubber tubing.
5)drill another hole into the bottom chamber a few inches above the bowl. this hole should correspond to the tubing's width.
6)then drill hole about 2"-3" up from divider in upper chamber. drill the hole 6" above the divider. drill the hole at an pretty steep angle.
7)feed the tube through each hole. barely into the bottom chamber. the tube should go into the upper chamber at an angle and feed through to the base of the upper chamber. this tube will filter the smoke from the bowl, into the lower chamber, up through the tubing, down into the upper chamber where it will be filtered.
8)seal each tubing-bong hole with a good clear caulking. the water goes into the upper chamber.

the result is a bottomless bong/water filtered steam roller. you seal the base of the bong up with your hand as you smoke, move your hand to inhale.

So the hot metal bowl is touching the PVC pipe? Yuck.

SWIM once made a bong out of PVC pipe, but he was sure to include a downstem sticking out about 6" from the pipe.

true the hot metal bowl did cause some melting. it was a small bowl though, and was fine for a few large hits at a time.i will post a photo when i set my scanner up.

I can't snap up any references, but I don't think that inhaling vapors from PVC is very healthy.

yeah. i was about 16 then, ten years ago. new to forum and just sort of posting on impulse. your bowl plan, combined with the design would work. i guess i should have considered the thought of a 14 year-old kid inhaling PVC...efforts will be made to be more resonsable. thanks.

If you allow hot metal to contact PVC, the result likely is called "outgassing." Most PVC is poorly made, and is not used for archival storage of valuble materials/documents. Reason being is it will put out hydrogen chloride (HCl) - which eats things like paper, metals, lungs, etc. If one is using such a design, find something better. Or at very least fill the device with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) solution rather than just water. This should neutralize any HCl that escapes.
