Re: is there any prescription tabs available to u.k like amphetimine

Adderall is available in the UK and thats not like amphetamine it is amphetamine.

Then there is Ritalin which is methylphenidate if you can't pronouce that it is meh thill FEH nih date....which gives you similar effects. So I'm told. Methylphenidate is found in: Concerta, Metadate CD, Metadate ER, Methylin, Methylin ER, Ritalin, Ritalin LA, Ritalin-SR.

Hope this gives a little insight, if not oh well....I tried

Adderall is amphetamine-dextroamphetamine and it is used to treat narcolepsy and attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADHD). We have a whole forum dedicated to adderall, ritalin, concerta and ampetamines. Please use the search engine to find more.

And to address another issue please review the rules of the forum. Pay special attention to the self incrimination part...

Re: is there any prescription tabs available to u.k like amphetimine

Adderall is not listed in the British Natonal Formulary, so will not be licensed for prescription in the U.K.. May be found privately, but A Certain Mouse has yet to hear of it. Strange really, as it's a British drug from what I can gather...

Dexedrine (Dexamfetamine Sulphate) is licensed for the treatment of narcolepsy & adhd (i.e. in children). Other amfetamine-like medications available are Atomoxetine (Strattera, a SNRI (selective norepenphrine reuptake inhibitor - similar to Venlafaxine)), Ritalin (Methylphenidate), & Modafinil (Provigil). Of them all Modafinil is the one most likely to be prescribed to an adult, being licensed for

daytime sleepiness associated with chronic pathological conditions including narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome, and chronic shift work
, although I have known adults to be prescribed dexamfetamine also.

Be aware that British doctors are not as likely to prescribe these medications as their American counterparts, & would certainly want a battery of tests before writing the 'script.

Adderall Now Available In The UK

Well this how I came to the conclusion. Feel free to correct me. This was an article back in 2001 from adders.org. From what it looks like they were actually welcoming it at the time.

Adderall Now Available In The UK

adders.org has been advised by BR Pharma International Ltd that Adderall is now available in the United Kingdom.

BR Pharma International Ltd. who in March last year made Ritalin Slow Release available in the UK have now gained the agreement of the Medicine Control Agency and have obtained all the necessary permits from the Home Office to make distribution of Adderall legal in this Country. The drug itself has still yet to be fully registered in the United Kingdom but it is now perfectly legal for it to be prescribed by Consultants, GP's and to be obtained by pharmacists on a patient by patient basis.

Dr. Geoff Kewley of The Learning Assessment Centre in Horsham, West Sussex, one of the Country's leading specialists in ADHD commented, "Obviously, as this stage, we haven't been able to use it very much but, certainly from the experience in North America - where it is used very significantly - it has been very effective. We are greatly looking forward to having it available. The availability over the last 12-18 months of sustained release Ritalin has made an enormous difference to the management of children and adolescents with ADHD, especially those adolescents who have either forgotten or been too oppositional about taking their short-acting Ritalin at school. Though Adderall will have at least a similar benefit profile, it adds to the increased availability of effective medications for managing ADHD and is a very welcome advance."

A recent study in the U.S. which was published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in May 2000, said: "Adderall(R) (mixed salts of a single-entity amphetamine product) is significantly more effective at reducing inattention, oppositional behaviour, and other symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) than methylphenidate, an older ADHD treatment.

The study of 58 children with ADHD also found that the benefits of Adderall last longer than those of methylphenidate (which is sold under the brand name Ritalin(R)). In fact, 70 percent of patients taking a single morning dose of Adderall found significant improvement in ADHD symptoms, while just 15 percent of patients taking methylphenidate improved significantly with only one dose."

Apparently all a pharmacist has to do is to fax a photocopy of the original prescription to BR Pharma International on (UK Only) 020 8207 5557 (Tel:020 8207 0770) BR Pharma and ADDerall can be sent by special next day delivery.

At present Adderall is only available in packs of 100 tablets in both 5 and 10mg doses. More information on Adderall can be found on our medications page.

Re: is there any prescription tabs available to u.k like amphetimine

I've come across similar bits of literature before about Adderall, but feel it paints a misleading picture of the ease with which it could be obtained. Adderall remains unlicensed for the treatment of ADHD or ADD. Un-licensed prescription in the U.K. often needs sponsorship from the local NHS Trust, & is usually restricted to patients for whom all other alternatives have been exhausted. Many doctors may be reluctant to prescribe as they are more liable if things go horribly wrong than if they had prescribed a licensed medicine. Basically, if it aint in the BNF, it aint licensed, & is for all intents & purposes not available through the NHS. Some private consultants may be a bit more free & easy in their prescriptions however, & it would be interesting to hear from British ADD patients who have successfully been prescribed Adderall.

From The General Medical Council Guidelines

Quote:
Prescribing unlicensed medicines
  1. You can prescribe unlicensed medicines but, if you decide to do so, you must:
    1. Be satisfied that an alternative, licensed medicine would not meet the patient's needs
    2. Be satisfied that there is a sufficient evidence base and/or experience of using the medicine to demonstrate its safety and efficacy
    3. Take responsibility for prescribing the unlicensed medicine and for overseeing the patient's care, including monitoring and any follow up treatment (see also paragraphs 25-27 on prescribing for hospital outpatients)
    4. Record the medicine prescribed and, where you are not following common practice, the reasons for choosing this medicine in the patient's notes.

ADHD medication

Reviewed by Dr David Coghill, senior lecturer in family psychiatry
What medicines are available to treat ADHD?

There are three types of medicine licensed to treat ADHD in the UK.
  • Those that contain the active ingredient methylphenidate - Concerta XL, Equasym, Equasym XL and Ritalin. Methylphenidate is also available without a brand name, ie called methylphenidate.
  • Those that contain the active ingredient dexamfetamine. Dexedrine is the only one available at present.
  • Those that contain the active ingredient atomoxetine. Strattera is the only one available at present.
Methylphenidate and dexamfetamine are often grouped together under the name 'stimulant medicines'. Stimulant medicines have been used to treat children with ADHD for over 30 years.

Atomoxetine is a non-stimulant medication that treats ADHD in children 6 years of age and older and adolescents. In some cases adolescents may continue treatment into adulthood. Atomoxetine has been licensed since May 2004.

...

When are they used?

Medicines will only be used once a diagnosis of ADHD has been made, usually by a psychiatrist or a paediatrician specialising in ADHD.

The decision to use any medicine should involve doctor, parents and child. Child psychiatrists and specialists start the initial prescribing, but your GP may sometimes be able to continue with further prescribing and monitoring of the treatment.

Your child’s age will be a factor in deciding when medicines are used.

...

Methylphenidate

There are four brands of methylphenidate available in the UK. There is also an unbranded form - simply called methylphenidate.
  • Equasym, Ritalin and generic methylphenidate

Equasym, Ritalin and unbranded (generic) methylphenidate are all immediate release forms of methylphenidate. They start working within about 30 to 60 minutes of taking a dose, and the effects wear off about three to four hours later.

This means they usually need to be taken two to three times a day, ie a dose at breakfast and at lunchtime, with some children also needing a dose in the early evening as well.

The last dose should ideally not be within four hours of bedtime, because this may cause your child trouble getting to sleep.

The dose should be carefully adjusted by your child’s doctor and will vary from child to child. Tablets may need to be halved or quartered to get the correct dose.
    • Equasym and generic methylphenidate tablets come in 5mg, 10mg and 20mg strengths.
    • Ritalin tablets come in the 10mg strength only.
  • Concerta XL

Concerta XL is an extended release form of methylphenidate.

The outer layer of these tablets dissolves immediately, giving an initial dose of medicine.

The rest of the medicine is then released gradually from a special membrane inside the tablet over the rest of the day, with the effects lasting for up to 12 hours. This mimics the effect of taking three daily doses of Ritalin, Equasym or generic methylphenidate.

This means your child can take one dose in the morning and may not need a second or third dose during the day.
    • Concerta XL tablets come in 18mg and 36mg strengths.
    • The tablets must be swallowed whole with liquid and not chewed or broken, because this will stop the slow-release mechanism working.
    • The tablets are capsule-shaped to make them easier to swallow whole.
    • The Concerta XL tablet passes through child’s digestive system without fully dissolving so don’t be alarmed if you or your child notice the tablet shell in his stools - this is normal and not harmful.
  • Equasym XL

Equasym XL is also an extended release form of methylphenidate.

The capsules release 30 per cent of methylphenidate immediately, giving an initial dose of medicine for the morning. The remaining 70 per cent of the dose is released gradually through the afternoon.

This means the capsules provide enough medicine to cover the school day, without your child needing to take a dose at lunchtime. This mimics the effect of taking a morning and lunchtime dose of Ritalin, Equasym or generic methylphenidate.

Since they cover the school day, rather than the whole day, the effects of these capsules may wear off too early in the evening for some children.

If behaviour is still a problem in the evening, your doctor may suggest your child takes a small dose of immediate release methylphenidate to cover this time.
    • Equasym XL capsules come in 10mg, 20mg and 30mg strengths.
    • The capsules must be swallowed whole with liquid and not chewed or broken, because this will stop the extended release action from working.
Dexamfetamine

Dexedrine is the only brand of dexamfetamine available in the UK.

It starts working within 30 to 60 minutes of taking a dose and its effect lasts three to four hours. It is usually taken two or three times a day: the first dose in the morning, the second at lunchtime and sometimes a third dose at around 4pm.

Your doctor will adjust the dose needed specifically for your child, and the tablets may need to be cut to give the correct dose.
  • Dexedrine tablets come in 5mg strength only.
Atomoxetine

Strattera is the only form of atomoxetine available in the UK.

Symptoms may start to improve in the first week of treatment, but it takes at least four weeks for atomoxetine to start to become fully effective.

A low dose is given for the first seven days. The doctor then increases the dose to the appropriate one.

It is usually taken once a day in the morning. But if side-effects are a problem, the dose can be split with one taken in the morning, one in the late afternoon/early evening.
  • Strattera capsules come in 10mg, 18mg, 25mg, 40mg and 60mg strengths.
  • The capsules should be swallowed whole and not split open or crushed.

All of the above applies to ADD (adults) also, although tricyclic antidepressants have also been used with some success apparently.
