Shiitake mushrooms (Lentinula edodes) are edible and AFAIK, they have no recreational value. They taste good, but they're definitely not like Psilocybe shrooms.

Interestingly, the Shiitake mushroom is used in the traditional chinese medicine:

To mantain health................................3-4 grams daily
Mushroom Poisoning cook......................9 grams in water, drink the liquid slowly, over the day
Belly disorders.....................................cook 9 grams in water, drink liquid
Headache eat cooked mushroom,............4-8 grams, according to strength of symptoms
High Cholesterin /Arteriosclerosis.............9 grams dried/90 grams fresh mushrooms, daily
High Blood Pressure...............................8 mushrooms daily
Liver disorders......................................8 mushrooms daily
Diabetes.......................................... ....8 mushrooms daily
Influenza......................................... ....6-8 grams (tea or extract)

.

Re: Shitake mushroom

as funny as it might sound, i don't know. but it could be possible. because i remember when i was a child my dad and i went out several times to pick mushrooms (my dad is still a fanatic mushroom hunter ), and i ate a lot of mushrooms back then. dont remember exactly what kinds of them.

shiitake is also being sold as food in germany (if i remember ok).

Re: Shitake mushroom

Swim would be willing to grow Shitake just to enjoy their delicious flavour. If they are that good for you he would love to start cooking with them more often. Its not especially often you get a food you love that is quite healthy for you as well (swim is lucky to have garlic and onions!).

Those are quite large amounts of mushrooms listed for most of those conditions though. Swim likes mushrooms in his food but doesn't want to be swimming in them
