Paracetamol - What the hell? Limits on amount purchased

Hey,
So I was in my local shop today and I happened to take notice of a sign saying "It's now illegal to sell two packets of paracetamol containing tablets at the same time" or something along those lines

Then underneath it said inspectors will be doing checks and if the shop is found to break this rule there's a fine, I couldn't make out the number the fine was, it was either 1,000 or 10,000 euros.

Erm.. have I missed something? Has somebody overdosed or something and they have brought in this law or whats the story

As far as I know this might only apply to Ireland at the moment

I know that paracetamol is bad for the liver etc. but don't tell me there stopping amount of sales as kids have been trying to get high off them

Re: Paracetamol - What the hell?

I tink its something to do with suicides because they're not actually a pharmacy.
They've also been doing this in england and wales for a few years but i dont know whether it is policy or law.

It has been like this for years. SWIM used to work in a large supermarket and this was in place at least 3 years ago.

Next Up: Only 1 gallon of water may be used per house/day. Must prevent drownings - you understand.

(Meanwhile down at Saint Dingbats School, 6 children are found dead in a circle with a bucket of water in the middle of the bodies....)

Re: Paracetamol - What the hell?

Oh right never knew the whole situation was the same in england and wales. It's just I never expected to see ban so to speak on the amount of paracetamol one can buy.

Re: Paracetamol - What the hell?

I think it's more of a suicide prevention thing than anything else since you cannot get high on apap but you can bring about a slow and painful death. But as nagognog siad lets limit the amount of water you can buy too becuase you can drown yourself.

Re: Paracetamol - What the hell?

Shouldn't we limit the amount of air we breathe too. I mean with all the toxins in the air etc.

I propose an air tax, for every thousand lung fulls of air you take you get charged a small fee. ha ha

Re: Paracetamol - What the hell?

wouldnt suicide by paracetamol be just a tiny bit uncomfortable?? i mean, wouldnt you essentially be killing your liver and then waiting to die??

You're right. LD-50 of Acetaminophen/Paracetamol is 338mg/kg (oral). Takes somewhere around two weeks to die, huge pain from liver and kidney failure. I don't know how someone could use this for suicide.
