Peyote Myth
SWIM was wondering if anybody else has heard the myth that the duration of a peyote trip is about a week?
It seems to be "common knowledge" among most people from SWIM's area. It almost never fails: whenever SWIM mentions peyote to someone, the first thing that comes out of their mouth is usually something along the lines of "Yeah man, my buddy did that stuff and tripped for a week straight." Or "Yeah man, I did that stuff once. It was like a peak mushroom trip for 5 days." SWIM is interested in knowing if anybody else has heard this myth before, or has any idea how it came to be? |

ya swim has heard greatly exagerrated stories about the lenght of a mescaline trip....i think it might have to do with the native americans taking large amounts over a period of days to prolong their trip that leads people to believe that an average mescaline trip is days long.....which we know is unfortunatly untrue.

swim has done p. torch but never peyote but cant imagine it being that different if at all different, the trip is quite long but swim would say a week is an exageration... it takes like 2-2.5 hours to come one then u trip balls for hours and hours then u come down but its a real slow build up and come down so its like a full day of tripping... quite nice minus the vomiting

Yes SWIM has heard this myth, and others before. But SWIM lives down in Indian Country, and has numerous second-hand "Native American Church" Peyote Ritual experiences. The ceremony (roughly) starts with about 6-12 Church members stuck (you are not allowed to leeve) in a tipi, the shaman (Indian Doctor) then cleanses their spirits by varios methods (lighting herbs on fire and shaking the insence around the members face and body), once he is done with, he can see the persons spirit, and determines on how much peyote buttons or sips of peyote tea a person should take. After the memebers eat/drink the payote, there are varios rituals and chants they perform, and once the 12 hour session is done they can leave, and they are back to reality by then, and feel "Refreshed" spiritually and mentally. This is based on the info SWIM has gotten from his Indian pals, so some might parts may differ from the actual 1st hand "experience.

The material lit and the smoke spread in the four directions is Sage. Not the kind you use for cooking. Different plant. This is a blessing ceremony.
The direct effects of Peyote last between 8 and 12 hours after ingestion. This depends on one's individual metabolism, but rarely is one affected for more than 12 hours - aside from being tired and needing sleep. Rumors of all-week trips abound from other rumors regarding Native Americans and tend to be based in racist ideology. Another favorite rumor is the white cottony tufts on the Peyote buttons containing strychnine. This, too, is bull - it's cotton and can get stuck in one's throat if it's not removed. |

Re: Peyote Myth
Well, I have heard the story as well, and thru a little questioning, found that ANYTHING causing serious hallucinations, and growing in dirt, is labeled "peyote" by people. After some questioning you usualy end up finding out the person ate peyote seeds or leaves.... which would point to something other than peyote.
I have traced the seeds to datura, by despription once, the leaves looked like datura too, sort of. the leaves where all moldy and gooy, like datura leaves that had been left in a plastic bag till they turned to goo, apparently, it had looked like this when obtained, and the person ate half, and tripped for 3 days, the smell was almost datura too, but rancid. I have also heard of "bear grass" seeds being represented as peyote, as they cause 5 days of delirium, and are used by local natives, once in a while, the wrong native kid learns where to pick it, and it goes arround causing stupid children to go temporarily insane. In my experiance, NOTHING represented as peyote on the street is peyote, and most people who have done it, havent. |

Re: Peyote Myth
Don't they sell peyote cacti in headshops? can't say i've done much research but all I ever see is san pedros. As for the tripping for a week thing, think thats a loada bollocks to be honest, probably deriving from native american stories of sustained use I guess

Re: Peyote Myth
I read that mescal beans can give a three-day trip, and the two were confused one upon a time.
