Morphine Base to Morphine HCl

SWIM is having trouble finding a detailed description of how to convert Morphine base to morphine hydrochloride. SWIM knows it involves disolving the base in hydrochloric acid, but he is looking for details on how much acid to add, and how long to leave it sit and stuff like that. Could someone please direct me to where SWIM could find this information?

DEA reports, of all things, are generally a good place to start. Some of them are practically step by step instructions for the avid chemist. SWIM did a bit of searching, but all he could find is what swiy already knows: that it involves Hydrochloric acid, but he doesnt know how much or for how long, either.

SWIM also must point out that procedures like this are not something to take lightly if SWIY has little knowledge of chemistry. SWIM does not know SWIY's chemistry expertise, but even a seemingly simple procedure like adding some acid can be extremely dangerous if SWIY does not know what he/she is doing.

Thanks for the reply, but SWIM doesn't really understand the DEA reports and patents. SWIM came accross a thread stating that a dilute solution of acid(10%) is added to morphine base, then the hydrochloric acid is evaporated out, and one is left with morphine HCl. Now SWIM is unsure if this means add 10% hydrochloric acid or what else it might mean.

It should mean 10% hydrochloric acid, 90% water to SWIM's understanding. But he is not a chemist by trade, alas!

But if SWIY cannot understand chemistry instructions like this, is it a good idea for him to be playing with these chemicals? SWIM would not advise attempting something thats not first understood and studied well.

Forget about the DEA , they will never tell you what you want to know as a matter of course.

I can't find that morphine base->hcl write up right now. You have the right idea though. I just think you needed help with the weight by weight concetrations.
