$1 million in cocaine seized

STURBRIDGE - State police assigned to the Sturbridge barracks made a record drug bust yesterday during a routine traffic stop on Interstate 84, seizing 36 kilograms of cocaine, estimated to be worth at least $1 million.

The investigation into the incident, which occurred between 2 and 2:30 p.m., was continuing last night. Troopers were trying to positively identify a male suspect whom they arrested, state police said. A probe also was ongoing into the exact value of the cocaine, state police said.

The arrest marked the largest cocaine seizure ever by troopers assigned to Sturbridge, a spokesman for the barracks said.

The unidentified man taken into custody was operating a black Ford Explorer with Massachusetts plates, and although the cocaine was wrapped, it was in plain view inside the sport utility vehicle, state police said. An attempt to confirm his identity through fingerprints was being made last night, state police said. A preliminary investigation determined that he was a 26-year-old Fitchburg resident and was alone in the SUV, when it was stopped for motor vehicle violations, state police said.

The suspect was being held at the barracks here and is scheduled to be arraigned in Dudley District Court on Monday, state police said.

You would have thought anyone transporting that amount of cola would make sure his vehicle and driving are both within the law as to not attract unnessecary attention.

Thats probably just the excuse they gave for messing with him or else he would have got his ticket and been on his way.
