Drug info - Psilocybin Mushroom Cap/Stem Potency

SWIM wants to know a little bit more on shrooms. Are you supposed to eat stems? Any info in general about eating the stems or what to do with them will be great

Ok, here it is straight up...

The stems and caps have very little difference in potency. SO little that I doubt even the pro shroomer would notice. Growers who are in it for profit allow the caps to open. More weight=more money. When the veil tears from the stem connecting the cap, energy is concentrated on producing spores, not psylocybin. Mushrooms allowed to sporulate have a much bitter taste than mushrooms picked with the veil attached, not to mention have no more magic content in them, just bulk.

in SWIM's experience stems seem to cause more of a body high and caps are more of the visuals. 2grams of caps may give you an ok mind trip and body high ... I always recomend 3.5grams of open cap cubensis or 2.5 grams of closed cap cubensis. (cap and stem combined.)

The picture of the Hawaiians above is a cubensis strain. The veil is the thin white membrane that is attached to both the stem and the cap. Once this veil tears, it messages the fruitbody that it is now time to start producing spores. It is the strains that differ in body load, mind bends, not the parts of the mushroom, (sorry we will have to disagree here). Example: Equadors (cubensis)offer a large body load, stems and caps included, while hawaiians (cubensis)are more of a rolling mind bend. The molecular structure of say, hawaiians, are the same thru the entire mushroom. I have studied years on this very subject, and I believe that it could be possible that perhaps you had different strains, some with more stems than caps, or vice versa. Every strain of cubensis has different character traits as far as effects on mind and body. Also, setting, food consumed, and mental state play a part in tripping, and the effects one will recieve.

SWIM didnt eat at all for the entire trp, or before it. He read up on erowid the night before and prepared for the trip, didnt want to do anything wrong. So cubensis is a species of fungi, and equadors and hawaiins are strains? like weed and chronic?

swim believes that, for some species anyway, the caps contain more psilocybin.

quoted from lycaeum, on the species P. bohemica:

"The analysis of fruit bodies revealed psilocybin, baeocystin and in some cases psilocin. Psilocybin levels varied from 0.11% up to 1.34% by dry weight (9). The content of psilocybin and baeocystin was highest in the caps of the mushrooms (table 2)."

while the content may vary from species to species, SWIM believes this same general trend of higher psilocybin in the caps would be seen in most of them.

SWIM's heard of a couple studies that were done on this... one study
showed a definite higher level of psiloc(yb)in in the caps (although who
knows what species/strain/whatever), and another study claimed that it
was a strain based thing (some have higher cap concentration, some are
equal, etc). The overall potency of psilocybin mushrooms varies so much
anyways...

SWIM will try to find some articles on this.

SWIM doesn't really have a definite decision either way though personally;
has had good trips off just caps, and good trips off just stems. Great how
some people think the stems suck and give them away for free!

But honestly, ya eat the whole mushroom anyway.

Well, here is a study that was done on psilocybin mushrooms in which an
analysis of the concentration of psiloc(yb)in in the caps and stems was
performed... the results of this one show that there are definitely slightly
more alkaloids in the caps.

SWIM used to eat only stems because they didn't taste quite as nasty, gills stuck to one's teeth and all the rest. He always got to the same place as the rest of the travellers in his group.

Were they dry mushrooms or fresh? It makes a difference as to how much weight is a dose. Species of mushroom also makes a difference. Maybe the strain swiy took had low concentrations of psilocybin in them.

Also, some SWIM's just seem to be natural hard-heads to mushrooms...
SWIM has a friend who is like SWIQ, a dry 7g (P. cubensis) would be
barely enough for him to feel much of anything, while everyone else is
getting full-on effects from half that amount.

Is there less psychoactive material in the stem of magic mushrooms, or any other area of the mushroom for the matter? I am not speaking of a specific species of mushroom, but just in general. Sorry if this has been asked before, but search yielded no results.

swims heard there are slightly higher levels of psilocybin/psilocin in the cap... I'm trying to find the study that stated this... But the difference is minimal at best

SWIM remembers reading this study...there was VERY little difference between stem and cap psilocybin levels.
