police rights to spy email

Swim just talked by mail to a good friend who is in The Netherlands. They talked about some delicate stuff about mj and he was wondering if police can actually check anonimus mails accounts or track the user of that particular account in search of criminal activities

No they can't and wont just spy on random people's emails, if someone is under suspicion and they have a warrant then they can confiscate the pc and possibly read the mails that are on the computer but smart people dont keep that kind of info stored anyway.

If a person is gonna use e-mail for sensitive materials, get a free hushmail account, a encryption program, or something.

You may have noticed, in the USA, that only a few email servers are accepting international material. My ISP claimed this was to stop spam - but I smelled a rat. Especially because my email in this ISP was up to the rafters with the Nigeria Scam and similar crap.

As we all found out down the road, the reason for this narrowing of transmissions was so the emails could be herded through the NSA to scan for key words. If a key word/phrase is found in the email - it is held for further study.

Remember this: Under the Patriot Act, if something is found not connected to the primary investigation - it is, nonetheless, admissible evidence to be used against you.

Yes, this has been going on for years.

But with new fears of terror and further advancement into so called public security they can now start to jusity this blatant invasion of privacy as a need for national security under new anti-terror laws.

God bless America. Still, the UK isn't far behind. They're both holding hands in such circumstances I'm sure.
