tobacco pipes + screens

Well I accuired a $31 tobacco pipe from a store in bush gardens, and as far as I can tell it has no filtering system. Is it normal for pipes like this to not have filters? I figured tobacco peices might not be small enough to fit through the small hole in the bowl so they might not be needed. Although, they didnt sell any screens at the store..
