What price do you guys pay for a pack of Djarum Splashes or
Blacks? When I was in Virginia I used to have to pay over $4.00 for a pack at a local gas station. That was like 3 or 4 years ago so I would imagine the prices are even higher now. Lately I have been buying cartons of Djarum Blacks online. If I order enough cartons I can get them for less than $2.00 a pack. |

Re: The Combined Clove Cigars and Cigarettes (Kreteks) Thread
In Singapore we have a host of kreteks, about 5-6 different brands, all of which are not bad. Sampoerna, Gudang Garam, winner- my fave(which has a banana taste to it), djarum and a couple more. Sampoerna happens to be the most popular of choices, followed by gudang garam, djarum's not bad, but not really a favorite here.

Re: The Combined Clove Cigars and Cigarettes (Kreteks) Thread
I love cloves, but I don't smoke cigs so they're a bit rough on my throat, but I love one every blue moon or so. Djarum's are very rough and not as tasty as some others I've had.
The flavor in them is so good, on occasion my penguin will take a few clove cigs apart and re-roll a little bit of it into a marijuana joint. He says it works fairly nicely and is a nice combination of nicotine/marijuana highs. |

SWIM was wondering if it's possible to get clove hand-rolling tobacco as he doesn't really like ready made cigs much?

I wouldn't doubt that they were Djarum. Djarum cloves are very good. Djarum specials have a distinctive brown cigarette wrapping. Djarum Blacks have an all black cigarette wrapping.
On two separate nitrous hits, these phrases came to me as absolute truth and revelation (as wonderful nitrous oxide so often does): "Whiteness is Purity" and "The Devil smokes black cigarettes" |

Yea, definately sounds like clove cigarettes. Nat Shermans are also black, but they are just regular tobacco cigarettes. In my opinion, they are much better than regular cigarettes, and they are sold as "luxery cigarettes". They don't smell terrible, taste pretty decent, and they are said to have no additives. For 6 bucks a pack, they are worth it. Any other cigarette makes me want to puke.

There are many black/brown colored cigs out there. From what you said about the wonderful smell they may have been an herbal/clove cigarette. Heres a small list of Black/Brown cigs.
Djarum Black Sobranie Black Russian Dreams Midnight Nat Sherman MCD, Black & Gold I agree with the poster below about Nat Sherman cigarettes, they are IMO the best cigarette you can buy. They are so called "luxury" cigarettes, they are about a dollar or two more tha your average camel or marlboro pack. Nat Sherman uses a higher quality tobbacco, are additive free, and seem to burn a bit longer then a Marlboro. I descided to make the switch a few months ago when I was trying to cutback, i went from a pack a day to half a pack a day. So I kind of rewarded myself for cutting back buy trying differant higher quality cigs like American Spirit, Dunhill, Nat Sherman... I found the Nat Shermans to be my favorites and have been smoking the Classics and Mcd since. They are a bit harder to find and more expensive but well worth it IMO. Give them a try http://www.natsherman.com/ Last edited by Jatelka; 30-09-2006 at 17:36. |

swim dated a girl who smoked clove cigarettes but wouldn't touch a regular cigarette. swim had to finally point out that clove cigarettes contain nicotine as well. personally, cloves make swim feel even worse than smoking regular cigarettes. swim doesn't handle some substances very well at all, though...

Re: Djarum Black.
I enjoy these too. They are far superior to the djarum lights, night and day, more so than other cigs. I smoke infrequently so I use them more as a treat than a day to day smoke, and they are great in that fashion. They burn slowly and therefore seem to last way longer than other cigs.

Re: Djarum Black.
I used to smoke a couple of packs of them.
After i found out the reason your tongue gets tingly is because of a local anesthetic in the cigarette, i stopped smoking them...after another pack ![]() Apparently they're so harsh on your lungs, the company puts an anesthetic in the cigarette so you don't feel it as bad. Gorgeous smell though! |

Re: Djarum Black.
The only anaesthetic in these cigarettes is clove, a natural source of eugenol (good for treating dental abscessses & anaesthatising fish too, apparently).

Clove cigarettes
Anyone smoke these? SWIM never has personally but is curious.
Aren't they meant to be stronger and more harmful, popular in south-east Asia and among young Americans? SWIM has a mind to try them, for the novelty. |

Something that's been puzzling me for a while (sorry to hijack your thread Baron!), but what on earth is a Clove cigarette? Does it actually have cloves in it?

Re: Clove cigarettes
Unfortunately they do Micklemouse. They are also called kretek, it's a mixture of tobacco, clove spice and flavoring rolled up into a cigarette. I have smoked these on a couple of occasions and they are some nasty cigs in my opinion. However they are good on the lips if you just dry hit the cigarette and lick your lips you get a real nice sweet clove flavor. To each their own I suppose. Never hurts to try them once but picking up a daily habit of tobacco and clove smoking just isn't my thing. I think I will stick to my Marlboro lights prolly till I quit or die.
Look up "kretek" on wikipedia to get a better understanding. What is more interesting was the legal battles. Edit: Thought I would add a couple links for those interested. Re: Clove cigarettes
The clove cigarettes, which are popular among wannabe-hippies from my old neck of the woods, are brutal. The favorite brand was Djarums - and trying to smoke one would leave Bongo, a regular smoker, gacking for air. But like slathering one's self in Patchouli Oil, it was considered a sign of being 'hip' in some circles.
Causing one's home to smell like an organic food-store caught fire, they are not allowed to be lit in my house. |

Ouch that shizzle sounds nasty. Do they have any effects different to nicotine (aside from the inevitable 'cough-wheeze-thud' tendancy)?
SWIM actually likes the aroma and flavour of cloves, but is unsure about smoking them. EDIT: Why the fuck am I SWIM-ing concerning tobacco lol. Meh. ~Dark PS: Marlboro Lights?! Bleurgh! Reds FTW!! ![]() From Wikipedia: "Haji Jamahri, a resident of Kudus, Java, created kreteks in the early 1880s as a means to deliver the medicinal eugenol of cloves to the lungs, as it was thought to help asthma. It cured his chest pains and he started to market his invention to the village, but he died before he could mass market it." All I can say is O! The irony kills me. Re: Clove cigarettes
I smoked reds for some time, actually it was the first I ever smoked. Smoked them bad boys for about 10 years before I turned sissy and went light. I tend to smoke more but it doesn't leave as bad of flavor in your mouth afterwards as I find reds to do. On the upside I don't seem to wake up in the morning unable to breath anymore either.

Re: Clove cigarettes
What an advertisment! Looks like the parody done on Marlboro cigarettes. Their slogan was: This is Marlboro Country. It showed a cowboy on his horse riding the open range. The parody showed the cowboy riding his horse - through a cemetary.

Re: Clove cigarettes
Haha. Very true!
Reds have a certain "Oomph" to them that other cigarettes don't have. They also leave a certain "Ouch" that other cigarettes don't. Anyhoo... I gotta get out of this forum sharpish, I'm 7 days into quitting. And it hurts. |
