question. kratom/opioids
One of the main problems SWIM encounters with opioids is the: "I can't shit in the morning" feeling. Kratom acts similarly to opioids or some have said more specifically benzos. Do the active chemicals in Kratom also slow your gastrointestinal system?

the "cant shit" feeling is due to the fact that opiates/opioids constrict smooth muscles. this is why swiy's pupils constrict to small sizes when swiy does them. other smooth muscles are in the sphincter, which can lead to constipation (incidentally, morphine is an excellent treatment for symptoms of cholera!) kratom exhibits the same constipation effect, according to swim, as well has having some of the classic opiate euphoria.

Constipation will occur with anything that binds to opiate receptors including Kratom.
It should pass in a day or two though. Urinary retention is also a common side effect. |

Actually, constipation is a consequence of opiate receptors in the gut that serve to suck the watery fluid out of your stool. Codeine was once used as an anti-diarrheal for this very reason.
If opiates stimulated constriction of the gut smooth muscle, then they would actually help you to shit better. Like metaclopramide (reglan) and other peristalsis stimulators. |

Oh shit. just realized that i was responding to YOU, 7lakes!
sorry. i was hoping that my once-per-month post would be directed at correcting someone who i DIDN'T wholeheartedly agree with 99% of the time! I guess you can just consider this a lesson for you in 'receiving constructive criticism.'... ...young grasshopper... ;P |

Opiates decrease bowel MOTILITY, which means that food -> fecal material sits in the bowel longer. The longer fecal material sits in your colon, the dryer it gets, since the primary function of the colon is to resorb water from feces so that we do not get dehydrated from diarrhea. Since motility is slowed, fecal material gets drier and hence constipation ensues. Local concentrations of an opiate in the bowel will help perpetuate that, so oral preparations probably constipate more than parenteral.
Hey Richard, glad to see you back, Snapper |
