Brand new San Pedro

I got a 15cm (6") San Pedro cactus. I've done some reading but I still have a few questions. I read that mescaline is produced by the cactus as a defense mechanism so to increase potency you shouldn't water it often etc to make the environment more stressful.

I'm just wondering what I should do with it, should I plant in the ground, a pot (wide pot so roots can grow or deep pot so root growth is stunted and more mesacline is produced. I have never taken care of cacti before so sorry for being so clueless. I'm just looking for a general outline of how to take care of it so I can get the most out of it (not necessarily tallest, just most mescaline etc)
