's experience, cannabis
usually exaggerated feelings of anxiety and could trigger a mild form of ocd (in that repetitive tasks would be performed over and over...not too bad when its related to playing video
games, but would get to be a bit annoying when he'd have to keep making sure a door was locked or that cops werent outside his house). swim has never heard of cannabis being used for anxiety, in his studies he found that it would generally work a little better for bipolar disorder. anxiety is a pretty common side effect
of smoking weed
, but one to two hits could potentially mellow swiy out. the key would be to start slow and pay careful attention to the setting, what swiy is doing at the time, anything else swiy has taken (including supplements or vitamins), and how much is smoked, etc. maybe keeping a journal with these factors and relative levels of anxiety recorded would help swiy establish if it helps?
there are plenty of options for helping with ocd and anxiety...many don't even involve pharmacotherapy, although if swiy wants to go with that route maybe talk to a doctor about wellbutrin
or propranolol. benzos
may hurt more than they help if its a generalized anxiety, since with that its easy to end up with a benzo
addiction and anxiety. but breathing exercises, talk therapy (notably cognitive-behavioral therapy), meditation, exercise, etc. can all help.
oftentimes people report using 5-HTP to sleep or as sort of a mood stabilizer, but swim notes that it could potentially contribute to feelings of anxiety on its own, even without cannabis. for some time, swim was regularly using tramadol
, which has the effect (among others) of elevating serotonin
through its SSRI
action. he ended up getting panic attacks from the overstimulation brought about by these higher serotonin levels. while 5-HTP is probably much milder than tramadol, swiy must remember that 5-HTP is converted to serotonin in the brain, and thus could maybe increase anxiety or even lead to some mild ocd symptoms.
swim doesnt want to sound preachy, but perhaps the best option would be to talk to someone before attempting to self-medicate with cannabis. or, if swiy does use cannabis, keep track of how much it seems to help or hurt. swim wishes you luck and please pm him if swiy has more questions! =]
