Looking Back at "Human Traffic" and "Groove"

To start things off, SWIM should point out that if SWIY has never seen the movies "Human Traffic" of "Groove", then SWIY might not be interested in this thread.

SWIM is a bit of a movie buff, particularily when it comes to independent films. In the year 2000, two movies came out that dealt with raves and the so-called "chemical generation". The two movies that SWIM is talking about are "Human Traffic" and "Groove". SWIM personally liked "Human Traffic" more because he was able to relate to the story and dialogue. He also appreciated how the movie dealt with the psychology of the characters before, during, and after their chemical-filled evening. "Groove" was also a good movie, but dealt more with the "technical" aspects of a rave. It was essentially the anatomy of a rave from beginning to end, from finding a wharehouse to throw it in to driving home after the rave at 7 in the morning and trying to fall asleep (and of course everything inbetween).

SWIM thought these two movies were very accurate and well done. SWIM's question is, from SWIY's experience, does SWIY think that these movies succeeded in creating an accurate portrayal of the rave culture, or does SWIY think it missed a few important points, if not missing the whole point. If you could add something to these movies that would make them more believable and more accurate, what would it be?

Swim has seen human traffic but not groove. Until not he hadn't heard of the groove so will try and hunt it down and watch it. swim found human traffic very enjoyable as watching it from the perspective of someone who enjoys going out clubbing etc. I think that human traffic was done very well and portrayed the scene quite well. However only a few years has passed since it was made and it parts of it can feel quite outdated now because things have moved on a bit. However Swim loves to watch the film before going out on a sesh as it gears him up for a good night out.

Thats why I love Trainspotting. Its set during the generation shift from the 80s to the 90s, but is more about friendships and life and the drugs and culture that surround them. It has much more universal themes than Human Traffic in my opinion, and was very well done so I can watch it over and over.

Human Traffic was quite good, but had more of a limited appeal and reviewability. Still I wouldn't mind watching it again as I haven't seen in it a while.

Haven't seen Groove, but definitely need to check it out!

Update: Swim went and watched the Groove the other day after reading this post. He liked it, being a fan of Digweed he thought that the soundtrack was good as mentioned above. Bit different to Human traffic which is a UK film whereas the Groove is US.

Overall Swim prefers Human Traffic but after watching it about 10 times, the Groove definatly makes a nice change and Swim would recommend it.

(P.S. Trainspotting is on film 4 next friday (I think) which is now a free channel to people in the UK(providing they have a freeview box)

Re: Looking Back at "Human Traffic" and "Groove"

I think that groove did a good job of capturing the spirit and feel of the SF scene of around that time.

Re: Looking Back at "Human Traffic" and "Groove"

Human Traffic was abso-fucking-lutely bang on the money when it came to recreating the scene from back then.

Right down to watching Bill Hicks on video before we went out (hey we didn't have DVD back then kids) !

Man, I need to get another copy of that on DVD and the soundtrack on CD, proper CHOONS too !

Re: Looking Back at "Human Traffic" and "Groove"

I thought the after party was great but could have been more acurate. For the time maybe it was spot on but now, things are sicker. When i go to a party now after a rave its not uncommon for 10 of us to buy 80 tablets and then go home 3 hours before work and attempt to sleep before attending work destroyed.

Moff is my hero though and Human traffic is supoib. I just think that it is a tamer version of what goes on. It is however very close to the reality in essence.
