The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) plans to build two new narcotics rehabilitation centers in Batam, Riau Islands, and Samarinda, East Kalimantan, in anticipation of a jump in drug as narcotics misuse in Indonesian has increased in the last few years.
The BNN’s director for rehabilitation institution improvement, Dominggus Sarambu, said on Tuesday that the government had prepared budgetary allocations for the development of the rehabilitation centers worth Rp 50 billion (US$5.15 million) each. The projects are scheduled to begin this year.
“This year, we [the BNN] will be starting the development of two new rehabilitation centers in Batam and Samarinda to supplement rehabilitation facilities in Lido in Sukabumi, West Java, and in Makassar in South Sulawesi. To address the anticipated jump in the country’s drug users,” said Dominggus.
He spoke on the sidelines of a coordination meeting held by the agency to empower communities in the prevention and tacking of illicit
drugs in Riau Islands.
According to Dominggus, the rehabilitation center in Batam would become the referral rehabilitation facility for drug users in Sumatra while the center in Samarinda would be provided for patients from Kalimantan.
Lido’s rehabilitation center would be designed as a rehabilitation center for drug users from Java and Bali. Meanwhile, the rehabilitation center in Badoka, Makassar, will accommodate patients from Sulawesi and Papua.
Dominggus said rehabilitation centers in Batam and Samarinda would have the capacity to accommodate 200 patients each. The facility in Lido would be expanded to accommodate 750 patients and Badoka, Makassar, could accommodate 200 patients.
“In the future, we will have four rehabilitation centers for narcotics users specially designed to make it easier for the patients to receive treatment near to where they live,” sais Dominggus.
Meanwhile, Riau’s head of provincial narcotics agency (BNNP) Kombes Benny Setiawan said the prevalence of drug users in Riau Islands ranked the second after DKI Jakarta, nationally.
Currently, all drug users seeking rehabilitation treatment from the province are sent to Lido in West Java.
“This year we will begin the development of a 500-square-meter rehabilitation center located on a 2.5 hectares plot of land owned by the BNNP Riau,” said Benny. (ebf)
