How to learn IUPAC: the key to your safety

2C-I and DOI have been mixed up many times. It is amazing how often this happens. This is just one of the results of users and RC companies not knowing IUPAC nomeclature. If SWIY does not know IUPAC and has no other way of reading what a IUPAC name means, then chances are that SWIY will suffer sooner or later. Now where do we start our course in IUPAC? Are there any handy tutorials around or is anyone motivated to make one?

A crapload of helpful links: http://www.wiley.com/college/weberci...C%20CHEMISTRY:

This is probably less of an introductory lesson than you're looking for: http://www.acdlabs.com/iupac/nomenclature/

This one I found entertaining and useful; too bad it doesn't go further (or "furthur"): http://www.chemhelper.com/hydrocarbons.html

Probably buried somewhere in that lengthy list of web resources is a killer intro tutorial. If anyone finds it, please post the sucker!

Great idea for a thread, Alfa.

I don't know a great deal about IUPAC nomenclature but the following links look quite useful & thorough.

Thank you Grul. SWIM is not normally a fan of Wikipedia, but it is a less ego-crushing method than the one SWIM normally applies to all questions of a chemical nature, asking SWIM's chemistry-major offspring.

SWIM's offspring is very bright, but does indulge in the occasional eye-roll or head-smack when SWIM asks what offspring considers "simple" questions. (*sigh*)

Great stuff! Could someone with a good grounding in IUPAC give those links a review though, & highlight any inconsistencies or wrongness, if any?

Wikipedia's great, but by it's very nature isn't always to be entirely trusted...

Some infos about the structure of phenethylamines : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenethylamine

and tryptamines : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tryptamine

It can help to replace the positions correctly

MoOdy: The images of the molecules in those docs is basically upside down. Compared to general texts, these would serve to utterly confuse a newcomer to organic chemistry.

Bongo gives this a Thumbs Down award.

Micklemouse: These appear straight forward and a good starting point.

Bongo gives these a Yawn Stretch Yup award.
