Absinthe legally available in Holland
I just saw on the news that absinthe is now sold legally in the Netherlands since its prohibition in the beginning of the last century. They noted though, that the concentrations of thujone in the absinthe that is sold, are fairly low.

It is also (or at least was when I was there a few years ago) available in the czech republic. Don't know about concentration since I never had any when I wasn't already a bit loaded.

Check erowid: http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/absinthe/
Although I have to say that everything I find about the effect is absinthe is pretty vague. I wonder if anyone ever isolated and nibbled the active ingredient(s). |

I tried absinth (bought in slovakia) a few times in the last few weeks. It makes me drunk in a nice way, but I dont think I would be able to make the distinction in effects between absinth and other high alcohol liqour. Any other opinions?

And in Estonia it's also legal but I don't know how much thujone it contains. I once bought a 350ml bottle but it was crap. Then, later, I got a 700ml bottle of german absinth - it was much better. When I mixed it with sugar and water it turned milky-white
It's effects were noticable and quite nice.

Does anyone have any experience in making absinthe? It seems like it would be a good conversation piece at a party to serve homemade absinthe. I mean, with all the yuppies making their own beer and wine, why not one-up them?

my appologies for posting whatever came to mind at the time -- i should have looked into it before opening my mouth. Anyway, I did do quite a bit of reading about absinthe last night and decided that making anything of quality is probably not worth the effort and resources -- at least until I develop some knowledge of the stuff anyway. So I called up a contact in europe and had a few bottles shipped -- I'll let you guys know what I think of it when it arrives.

pfft, tried it once when I was in Prague in the czech republic. Just got a bit drunk off it, but hadno ther effects than with other liquors. I was disappointed. I guess the thujone levels are so low you don't feel any effect of it. I guess no legalcompany will produce real absinth anymore, maybe it still exists somewhere, but I think that the absinth you can buy in the store isn't real absinth |

From my experience there is only a SLIGHT difference between absinthe
and other forms of alcohol. You do get a clear-headedness along with the drunkenness but it's more like drinking a pot of coffee before the night's drinking. One difference, however, is price; the last bottle of absinthe I bought was $200 US. That bottle was distilled by a small French company called Jade which only produces accurate recreations of pre-ban absinthes, that is, absinthes from before 1915 or so. Their website is www.bestabsinthe.com. If you try their products you will not be disappointed. Now, what you need to understand is the difference between absinthe and absinth. If there is no "e" in the title chances are you're looking at a bottle of Czech or German absinthe, which is shite, pure and simple. The ONLY absinthes you should EVER consider buying are French, Suisse or Spanish brands as those are usually decent. Also: NEVER light it on fire!!! That's a marketing ploy created by a Czech distillery called Hill's as a gimmic to sell their swill. Now, I'm not saying that absinthe doesn't have any of the psychotropic characteristics that history has accredited it with. Au contraire. My last girlfriend and I drank absinthe every night before we went to sleep so we'd have something to talk about in the AM i.e. vivid, messed up dreams. But, you won't be cutting off an ear or anything... Now, absinthe will alter your perception of things while you drink it, too; but the effects are SUBTLE. I reccomend tons of experimentation with various different brands. That's what I've done and I've grown to appreciate the absinthe experience. Well, what else can I say? Let me know if my advice was helpful at all and ask me specific questions if you want to know more. My website has a list of the brands I've tried and what I thought of them: www.mts.net/~deam/absinthe Each bottle image is also a link to the distributor of that particular brand. Enjoy! |
