The right wing Christian government has fallen tonight. It's party time!!!!

Who will replace them and what will this mean for drug policy?

It can only get better. Chances are big that the cultivation of cannabis will now become legal.

They will stay on until the Dutch have voted for a new government. Meanwhile they are not allowed to wreck any more. This government has ruined 30 years of drug policy and a good part of the social system. The last years where an perverse display of lies and deceit. Many incidents happened which would normally be enough to let a minister or even a government fall. They just kept backing each other up no matter what. I am very happy this has ended.

I think we'll have a green parlement this time instead of purple... this was purple III wasn't it alfa? I reckon PvdA (labor party) and SP (socialist party) and perhaps Groen Links (Green Left) to receive alot more votes this time... but like always it will be forming a coalition with atleast 1 cristian party... I'll be voting PvdA...

at this moment i can't imagine the uk govt. even thinking about implementing any sort of sensible drug policy like the dutch have... although they did downgrade cannabis a couple of years ago it seems like they are starting to regret it, our justice system seems to be getting more and more draconian all the time... and judging by what is written in the papers this is what most people want, i thought people everywhere were the same as the idiots britain seems to be full of.

We had a good drugs policy which was IMO opinion heading the right way. But this government has closed half of the coffeeshops down, made it extremely difficult for coffeeshops, smartshops & growshops to survive and was just going for even tougher regulations. The justice minister made it very clear that he wanted to get rid of the drugs policy: a total ban.

The conservative government was taking it's cues from the Axis of Evil itself: Bush, Blair, and Howard. Look at the USA and you will see that imprisoning 50% of the population is not such a far-fetched concept. The fastest growth-industry in the USA is the prison industry. In some urban areas, 20% of the African-American community is currently serving prison sentences. Mostly for victimless drug-crimes.

I was somewhat surprised that so many dutch are so optimistic about the oncoming elections. I would have thought that the Van Gogh´s and Pim Fortuyns assassinations had among dutch voters the same kind of effect that in Scandinavia was provoked by the Muhammed´s funnies on our most stupid paper, i. e. driving voters in the hand of conservative parties.
I hope to be wrong.
As a result of these episodes Denmark´s conservative governement has never been stronger and if elections would be called now, I´m pretty sure they would win by an even greater margin.
What´s worst is that even the social democrats ( the biggest oppo party) is so frustrated by the situation that is starting to emulate some of the hateful policies of the right.
Maybe not everyone knows that in the center of Copenhagen has existed since the early seventies a kind of city within the city, called Christiania, with its own restaurants, bars , theaters , shops, factories, etc. where drugs (with the exception of Heroin ) have always been tolerated and freely sold and where police never entered .
Lately , feeling strong like never before, this govt. sent the police in force three times into Cristiania to arrest people for pills (ecstasy) and maybe a bit of speed and now they start talking about limiting the sale of cannabis derivates too.
This had never happened before. The policing of Cristiania was always delegated to the "Christianites" themselves.
Well, I hope the dutch will elect a better and freer majority.
By the way , when a govt. falls in Holland is it necessary to go to the pools or a new majority could be found in the parlament?

Yeah, the word came out today: november 22nd. Yes, meanwhile they will try to rule with a government that has a minority. Worse part of this all is that since the party who left the government was a left to middle wing party, all that remains is right wing now. So the time until elections will be used foir efforts to get as many right wing laws approved as possible. At the same time they are likely to plunder the state funds to give out presents to the population. They claim these benefits are the results of their efforts in the last 4 years.
The voters have been driven ionto the hands of the conservative parties. As a result they have been in power. The display of travesties have been revolting in the last years and the population has suffered from them. Our country has gone to war to places we have no business going. All under excuses which turned out to be clear lies. Poverty has not been so large since long. 66% of the population is ashamed of the prime minister. I know no one who will vote for the christian democrats.

Beautiful country. Hope nothing happens in the last days before the election to spook or cajole the populis back into the arms of the Christian Democrats… It would be a shame to see the Netherlands head the wrong way on a range of social policies when some other European countries are just starting to catch up. Tricky thing, though, minority governments, even if their days are numbered.
