Detroit doctor pleads guilty to providing illegal prescriptions

This happens so often nowadays!! Has anyone encountered docters who where guilty of this?


DETROIT -- A doctor accused of illegally prescribing tens of thousands of doses of narcotic drugs pleaded guilty Friday to one count of unlawful distribution of controlled substances.

Dr. Elena Perry-Thornton, 55, of Detroit, faces up to seven years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million, the U.S. attorney's office said. She is free on a $25,000 unsecured bond until her sentencing hearing, scheduled for Sept. 27 before U.S. District Judge Arthur J. Tarnow.

Prosecutors said Perry-Thornton illegally prescribed more than 90,000 doses of drugs including OxyContin, Vicodin and Xanax after she filed for bankruptcy in 2004. She provided people with prescriptions for the drugs without examining them and for amounts exceeding legitimate medical needs, according to court documents.

Authorities said they began investigating Perry-Thornton after a suspicious pharmacist contacted Dearborn police.

The Michigan Department of Community Health revoked her medical license in January.

Thats how easy it is to start selling drugs when you're in a tight spot.
