I received this article today, which shows ephedrine illegal in Ireland:
Slimming tablets smuggler jailed
A PAKISTANI who smuggled 320,000 slimming tablets containing the controlled substance ephedrine into Ireland has been jailed for 15 months by Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
Abdul Quadir Yousef (31), born in Pakistan with an address in Mayfair, Johannesburg, South Africa, pleaded guilty to unlawful importation of the tablets at Dublin airport on June 8, 2004.
Garda James Sixsmith told Robert Barron BL, prosecuting, that Yousef was stopped at Dublin airport immigration control following a flight which originated in Karachi. His baggage was found to contain 320,779 tablets containing ephedrine.
Gda Sixsmith said ephedrine can be used as a sports stimulant, a slimming agent and in various medicines such as decongestants. It is not banned in the UK and was only banned here last March. It is sometimes used as a substitute for ecstasy.
Judge White backdated the 15-month sentence to June 2004 when Yousef, a father of two with no previous convictions, was first arrested.
