Seminar and exhibition mark Anti-Drugs Day

A seminar and an exhibition were the highlights of the World Anti-Drugs Day, which was marked in Qatar yesterday under the patronage of the Minister of State for Interior, HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani.

Several events were drawn up for the occasion by the committee in charge of the celebrations.

An exhibition with the motto ‘Let us unite and say together: No to narcotics’ was opened at the City Center by Director General of Public Security Major General Saad bin Jassim al-Kholeifi.

Various departments including the Anti-Narcotics, Medical Services, Ports and Customs Authority, Social Affairs Department of the Ministry of Civil Services Affairs and Housing, juvenile incarceration centres are participating in the event.

Later in the day, Major General al-Kholeifi inaugurated a seminar at the Doha Sheraton on the theme: Recent Experiments in De-Addiction and Rehabilitation.

In his opening speech, he referred to the serious problems caused by drug addicts in many countries and said a good number of persons have been wrecked and incapacitated due to addiction and consumption.

"They are behind many hideous crimes and unruly behaviour in every society. Hence the most urgent measure to be taken now is to find effective means to wean away such indulgent individuals from addiction and abuse."

The seminar was chaired by Dr Mohamed Abdul Aleem Ibrahim, a consultant and head of the Psychiatrics Department of the Hamad Medical Corporation and Dr Taher Shaltout, a consultant in the department.
