SWiHR has not had the pleasure of visiting the Netherlands yet, but he feels that a rating system of some sort would be very helpful for when he does.

Ratings could be scored out of 10 (1/10 = crappy shop, 6/10 = ok shop, 10/10 = great shop, etc), and a brief description of why you would give that rating would be helpful as well.

SWiHR assumes that there are probably some coffeeshops that have great menus, but not the best environment, and vice versa. So between posting the menus, pics, details, ratings, and descriptions, SWiHR thinks this could really help people find their way around and make sure they have the best time possible! peace...

I have created a test review. Please check it out and tell me what more you would want in it: Test review: Abraxas, Amsterdam
Please add a test rating there.

Yes, I had that one in mind for the coffeeshop review category. Feel free to post it there. If you can, please expand it by taking the Abraxas review as an example. I'll delete the old topic.

I don't think I have enough information on the place to right as in-depth a review as the Abraxas example. SWIM will probably be in Amsterdam again this summer and will keep the review structure in mind when soaking in the delights of a few coffeeshops.

I'ld like to read something other than "DUDE, I smoked a huge joint and got sooooo wasted!

I mean, sure, that's to be expected in a drug forum, but what about the atmosphere, the people and the coffee?

So far, it's all been good.

Maybe a little info on nearby bars & restaurants because some people like to drink when they smoke, and everyone that I ever knew who smoked always got the munchies.

I'ld like to see who's going to post the first unfavorable review of a coffeeshop, because they can't all be good.

Re: Coffeeshop reviews

SWIM thinks that one of the most important aspects of a coffeeshop is not its hours, or if it serves food, or any such thing as that (with all due respect to those who think that's important). SWIM's most important criteria are:

1. Honesty. SWIM has gotten ripped off at coffeeshops before.
2. Vibe. If one isn't comfortable in one's surroundings, why bother lighting up?
3. COFFEE. SWIM, an American, absolutely loves Dutch coffee. A good cup of coffee served with a tiny spoon and a cookie just makes SWIM chuckle like a little girl.
4. Availability of Internet PC's at a reasonable price. What better time to write one's buddies a postcard from the road?
5. Reasonably quiet. Lots of shops have that thoompa thoompa thoompa music that SWIM finds particularly odious. Some decent music or a darts match on TV is just SWIM's speed.

So for all the above reasons, my favorite coffeeshop is Sheeba, on the Warmoesstraat (73), in Amsterdam Center. The herb and hash are a little pricey (say, E12 for a gram of Caramello) but they weigh it on a high-accuracy digital scale so you at least get what you pay for. They make great coffee, the staff is friendly, it's quiet, they have good coffee and pipes they sell for 5 Euro for hash. SWIM has a pic of the place somewhere; perhaps later he'll upload one.

The decor is a little odd; there's a plaster-of-paris model of James Dean overseeing the internet kiosks. But besides that there are interesting murals on the walls with soccer stars interspersed with English and American music personalities. The seats are comfortable and the vibe is just perfect. It's the first place SWIM goes when he heads into town.

Parenthetically: SWIM absolutely ADORES Amsterdam. He's been there a number of times and can't wait to go back.

Re: Coffeeshop reviews

to the WOODMAN,swim can tell you from experience that the munchies are nothing to worry about when in amsterdam,as almost every coffeeshop you walk out of,you'll see a bakery, restaurant or some kind of eatery within 20 feet, and if there is no eatery, assured there will be another coffeeshop.

Just reading the Warmoesstraat, makes me feel a bit exited. How do you pronounce these foreign words? !!!I feel like a lost visitor allready!!!

Anyway, one place I've heard of had some table, accounting for the contents of their products; THC, CBD (I supose..) and some third one ..THCV maybe, which all influence the effect.
I guess this would be interesting to know for some connoisseur.

Can't remember the name of the place though.

Re: Coffeeshop reviews

Hey SWIRupert, you'd pronounce it more or less "VER-meh-shtrat," at least that's how this American ear hears it. SWII'll let you know exactly once he accrues enough miles to get a ticket to go back!

Re: Coffeeshop reviews

Having spent a great deal of time in the Netherlands, even a brief stay in jail in Amsterdam (where most of his knowledge of the Dutch language comes from), Cowboy can confidently say that the correct pronunciation is "var-mooh-straht." The "oe" in Dutch is pronounced like the "oo" in "poop".

As for the topic of this thread, Cowboy agrees that it is very important that the vibe of said coffeeshop be discussed. Cowboy has encountered many coffeeshops that have top-notch weed for sale but are terrible for smoking because they are too small, staff are rude, etc.
