Retired Berkeley Cop gets off lightly in drug case?
Now given the article about the two year sentence for a joint, this seems ridiculously leniant. Where the hell is the consistency? Oh what it is to know the right people. This article appeared on MercuryNews.com today:
Berkeley cop sentenced in drug case
A retired Berkeley police sergeant who pleaded guilty last month to grand theft and two felony drug charges was sentenced Friday to a year in county jail.
The charges -- which included possession of heroin and methamphetamine -- were filed against Cary Kent, 53, after an internal probe of missing drugs from department evidence lockers.
Kent was an 18-year veteran of the department who retired in January rather than submit to questioning during the internal investigation.
Alameda County Superior Court Judge C. Don Clay gave Kent and his attorney 45 days to find a suitable alternative, such as home detention, to his one-year jail sentence. There is concern, because Kent is a former officer, he will face problems in jail. Kent will also be placed on five years' probation.
The Berkeley police and the Alameda County District Attorney's Office conducted a joint criminal investigation in January after a semi-regular audit of the department's evidence lockers showed that more than 100 envelopes containing confiscated drugs had been opened and the evidence removed.
Police say Kent was a member of the department's narcotics unit and the supervisor responsible for handling drug evidence booked into police custody. The criminal and internal investigations determined that only Kent was involved.
