Ice cream truck driver charged
Clinton Twp. police say she had crack

May 12, 2006
Sugar wasn't the only rush Sharon L. Gammey could have offered from the ice cream truck she was driving last month in Clinton Township.

Gammey, 41, of Roseville also had crack cocaine, according to township police.

She was in 41B District Court in Clinton Township on Thursday to answer charges after police found two rocks of crack cocaine in the truck's cash drawer on April 27, along with a pipe they suspect was used with the drugs.

Police do not suspect Gammey was selling the drugs from the truck.

She is charged with possession less than 25 grams of cocaine and possession of cocaine analogues. Both are felonies, and she faces up to six years in prison and fines totaling $27,000 if she is convicted.

She has not entered a plea.

"I can't comment on it," Gammey's attorney, George Birch, said Thursday. "It's a very unusual case."

Gammey's preliminary exam Thursday before Judge Linda Davis was quickly adjourned for further investigation.

A new court date has not been set.

According to township police, a resident called about 7 p.m. April 27 to report that he thought he saw somebody smoking crack while driving a blue ice cream truck on Finley, near Wurfel.

Police were sent to the area and spotted the truck on Little Mack.

The vehicle was pulled over, and police found the crack rocks in a search of the truck.

Nobody from the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office appeared for the hearing, and a call seeking comment Thursday was not returned.
