Been Reading about kratom
I've been doing some reading here for going on two days, trying to figure out wether or not I should mess with this stuff.
The allure of a buzz similar to opiates tempts me greatly, but the dosages necessary for a solid experience on some of the people here who are half my size, seems like a waste of money and unnecessary trouble when the real deal is easier to get a hold of and actually seems to be cheaper. |

The fact that people compare them to opiates does not mean it is the same. SWIM would prefer Kratom above opiates, due to the addictive qualities of opiates. Kratom is not totally free from that either, but so far SWIM has not noticed this effect with Kratom. SWIM is an occasional user.

Kratom's a pretty good product and the dosage really isn't that high if it's your first time using it or at least it wasn't very high for swim. I don't know about the regular leaves, but swim has had commercial premium powder and it's not difficult to consume. If you get the powdered variety then you don't have to make a tea out of it, you can just mix it with pudding or applesauce (about two tablespoons of powder) and it doesn't taste bad. Kratom isn't necessarily more expensive per dose than buying painkillers (either that or swim has gotten ripped off badly when buying pills), but you do have to shop around and compare prices.

SWIM is a heavy kratom user, and he finds the effects worthwhile even with some tolerance. The stuff gives a sort of clean golden glow to consciousness, compared to which the ordinary state is grey, dirty and dull. Although it's no party drug and delivers few thrills, nor is it a near worthless herb like Blue Lotus or wild lettuce. For those willing to attune to its benefits, it's quite rewarding. Just don't put it into the same mental category as heroin or coke and you will be OK... it's more similar to weed, so-called soft drug. Mix it judiciously with something else and it can be even better. SWIM used to use it as an extremely good comedown aid from cola, when he used 'em last summer. Turns the comedown from a hell into a real pleasure.
Is it like opiates? Yes, if you don't develop a tolerance to it it can be about as good as vicodins. If you want the full effect, never use it regularly/daily. Last edited by Nicaine; 09-05-2006 at 08:53. |

I don't know about where you live, but pain pills around me aren't legal. And as far as I know it is legal to purchase Kratom in the US. So even if the cost is similar, the legal ramifications could point a person toward Kratom. But SWIM didn't feel like they were quite in the same league. I agree that Kratom is more of a soft drug in that you cannot just increase the dose to increase the pleasurable effects like you can with many opiate containing pills. But it is also more safe because of this, in my opinion. |

Pain pills aren't legal around here either, but I was just responding to the original poster's comment about price. It's true that the legality of kratom is an incentive to buy that instead of something illegal. Also, it doesn't seem to be physically addictive (if I remember correctly) which is also a plus. The only minuses are: it's not as easy as popping a pill (still easy, but pills are easier), you have to pay shipping and handling, it's not quite up there with powerful opiates (although swim would liken it to codeine and the first time swim used it was more on par with vicodin, but swim hadn't used opiates in a long time.), and that you do have to wait a couple of days for a delivery. Although, another plus is that (at least around here) painkillers can be scarce to come by whereas I always know where to go to get kratom.

Sorry for the mistake. For some reason I was thinking it was the other way around, but it's been a little while since I researched it.
