Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

Hi, someone I know has recently applied for social security disability and is wondering if joining a methadone clinic will have a negative effect on that. He isn't an opiate addict but he knows how good it feels, especially with a benzo script. He doesn't care about the negative effects because he is so depressed he is thinking of suicide, and has tried all meds and treatments. Any input?

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

If you like the good feelings that come from opiates you dont want to go on methadone. It just doesnt give any 'euphoria' or whatever you like to call it.It also means when you use other opiates you dont realy get the same effects and you make it more likely you may OD while chasing that buzz. Also if you go on to MMT your medical history will say your an addict and means there is very little chance of your doctor ever prescribing any decent drugs again.I understand how when you feel down the thought of being on methadone to help numb things may seem ok but after a while you will regret it.One of the reasons I regret going on it was that it meant I found it hard to get any 'euphoria' at all from any other drug. And in the long term it will probably just make you more depressed. If its an opiate type buzz you want the best way is to just use something like codeine now and again if you dont use too much you wont build a tolerance or get a habit. If you need help with depression or anxiety you need something else, methadone wont really help.Have you tried other methods??doctor/counsellor etc??

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

Yes, my friend has tried all SSRI's, shock treatment, and a healthy lifestyle. and hee's done methadone many times. he gets the euphoria each dose as long as he takse benzo's with it. His brother comes home each day high because he takes benzos with it. My friend doesn't care about future prospects aside from living on his own independently, which SSI can provide.

What about this Kratom shit? does it do anything?

It's a well known proviso of this forum that we absolutely do not deal with (advice on) self harm, threats/hints at same, and suicide, and how to avoid feelings that may lead to this.

Specialist proffesional/medical advice is required for that predicament. It really is. I truly wish the OP all the greatest in their life regarding the situation described, but there are limits as to what we can help with.

There are resources available to help with suicidal ideation, but it's way beyond the scope of Drugs Forum. Phungushead gives a marvellous and comprehensive list of resources at the very end of this post.

http://www.drugs-forum.com/forum/sho...76#post1100776

Be well.

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

I guess that word kinda threw the topic askew. Let's just say he's depressed but would never consider suicide (must have heard him wrong) but is mostly wondering if joining a clinic now would interfere with him recieving social security disability benefits (for psych issues).

Industrialist added 8 Minutes and 23 Seconds later...

Also, in reply to the classic propaganda phungus posted, relief is not simply a feeling, it's an absence of something undesirable, such as pain.

Post Quality Evaluations:
"classic propoganda" is an unfair dismisssal of a list of extensive help.

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

Industrialist, how do you propose going about actually getting accepted on this methadone programme when you are not addicted to opiates?

As for the suicidal thing,

Not a lot to misread there. if you are suicidal you need to be speaking to either a helpline, a GP or a mental health professional. or even all 3.

The "classic propaganda" has been used successfully many times. Methadone will not cure your depression. If you do manage to get on this programme it may provide temporary relief, but once that has passed or your tolerance has risen, what then?

I do understand the frustration you must be feeling (& understand that noone has actually answered the question you originally asked - for that answer you should probably speak to your local social security office, or MMT clinic), but this is not the route to go down & will create more problems than answers.

lol thats all thats required most places.. is 2 test positive.. def a loophole but not 2 sure of doin it..cuz u shouldnt be doin that in the first place, plus methadone clinic costs a lot compared to just goin out n gettin high ? like wihtout insurance it was over 3 grand for a 5 day stay .. and addiction shit has the highest level of security, 1 level above regular doctor / hospital shit .. and so does like the suboxone doctor, etc.. thats what my sub doc told me and showed me all these papers n shit , so i dont think u hafta worry bout someone finding out, they only can when ur a harm to urself or others (which in this case, thats posisble) .. or court ordered, but SSRI is kinda well monitored so not sure bout that one

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

Officially? No, it doesn't affect you getting SSI/SSdI.

In reality? Yes, it does.

I've been on SSI before, for years, as a child. Clearly, my Crazy started well before my addictions - and I'd gotten clean from my addictions & ended up back on the roller coaster due to multiple surgeries, etc. But that's really neither here nor there.

When it is seen that I'm on MMT, I get all kinds of additional scrutiny. A separate form was sent to me & my shrink after my initial forms were sent in, asking alllll about my drug addiction history, which came first - the addition or the Crazy, etc.

Not only was I denied, my appeal was denied as well. I had to get a lawyer, who says I'll get it, but mostly because I was on it before as a child & obviously am not Crazy due to addiction, but an addict because of my Crazy.

So, yeah, it'll fuck up your claim. You'll also have to tell your shrink & other docs you're on the clinic & they may decide to stop giving you benzos.

Kratom is very effective, so long as you get it from a reputable (online, usually) supplier. Don't bother with the crap at headshops, and don't get involved with 'extracts' - both are bullshit (for different reasons). Find a nice website that deals only in Kratom & you'll be more likely to have a good experience.

Opiates aren't the answer to depression, and although you say you don't care, you're only 26. Chances are, you'll hit 30 & care. *sigh*

All the best,

~Kailey

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

As to what Kailey elise said, I started a application, trying to get my life on some kind of track or whatever, signed up for the clinic and it halted everything and they flushed my app. The letter basically said "You never told us you were a junky, sorry junky we don't bankroll dope heads, welcome to the gutter." Now I finally got in a dual diagnosis program because I had issues since childhood, I just never would comply with treatment so the records....yeah whatever, but I second that, MMT will make the SSI app DOA instantly. But good luck! Personally, I recommend a good solid partial hospitalization program while meds are worked on and when that;s done, a follow up with a men's group and 1 on 1 thearapy and psyc med visits monthly until you can stand it and try to go from there. It does get better if you take the meds long enough for them to work and don't interfere with them by taking other drugs. God bless you, I pray God be with you this time in your life when you will make some very important choices that will affect the rest of your life.

RobertT added 2 Minutes and 1 Seconds later...

I'm sorry that was so long but you touched my heart a bit, man I been there when it doesn't feel worth it and I wish I could show you the future because it does get better at some point though it feel like it gets worse, at some point it gets better if you let it. It looks like you are giving it a chance...that's good

I don't have an answer for your original question, but I want to let you know I'm happy to see you're looking into more natural ways to help your depression.
I suffer from it as well and tried to self medicate (although I didn't realize it until it was too late) with opiates. Let me tell you that it will seriously just make it worse. Way way WAY worse. It made my anxiety nearly unbearable so I feel like I can't live without it sometimes... and my doc won't prescribe me benzos because of my opiate addiction [i guess she's scared that i'll get dependent on them as well...] so I can either get them off the street or just live with it which has caused countless relapses.

During my clean days I find that exercise and music helps the most.

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

I just got disability and was advised not to mention methadone because they are not understanding about methadone and could think you may just not want to work and that their money could go to support a methadone habit. I won but it was a long hard process. And I had a lawyer that is the best way to go for it.

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

Op- Im sorry to get on here and preach to you and tell you something you already have heard , I also realize this thread was started a few years ago. I am sure the guy has already found out the hard way (if Industrialist reads this) But I felt the need to set this straight for the people who may be in the same or similar predicament.

If you think your life is bad now you are in for a very real wakeup call, if you havent started messing with opiates DO NOT START! you have no clue how much worse your life can and WILL become, no clue whatsoever. Your problems right now are minor compared to what you are getting into, believe me..

Methadone is a godsend for someone with a real heroin problem, but a nightmare for someone who isnt ruined already...

Also, If you think you can pop a few vicodin and get a dirty UA to get into the clinic you are wrong. Yes it may get your foot in the door but they will figure out real fast that you are not a true junky. People who have been using for years need high amounts of methadone, ie. 100+ mgs, i doubt you would be able to stay awake with the initial 30mg they would start you off with.

If you have problems bad enough to keep you from working go file SSI but believe me, methadone, or any opiates/benzos are not what you need....

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

I just have to echo most others sentiments. How would you get get on the program without being an addict? Methadone is ridiculously addictive. I understand about being suicidal and opiates being the only thing that helps but please see a psych and don't go on methadone. One of the hardest drugs to get off. And also, you won't have the tolerance to handle even the starting dose probably.

Also, I don't know about where you are but there are waiting lists here for methadone and suboxone and you'll be taking the place of an addict who desperately needs to get clean.

I hear you on being suicidal, not knowing what to do etc but I don't believe methadone is the way. I'm on suboxone but I had a habit.

I hope you get the correct help you need.

I have been on Methadone for 13 years now and am also on SSI and it has never affected my SSI status. The only thing I don't do is pay for my doses with a debit card, that way there's no way anyone can say your using SSI money for your methadone . Always pay cash!

Re: Will joining a methadone clinic effect my claim for social security disability?

I would reccomend against any non addict from getting on MMT in any situation. most clinics will start you at 30mg/day and boost you up rather fast. You will begin accumulating methadone in your liver and a 30mg dose 10 days in a row is far more effective on the 10th day due to the accumulation. Subsequently add 5 or 10mg every other day (depending on clinic/doctor) and your lookin at alot of dope for someone who isnt tolerant to opiates. I cant imagine anyone going from not doing opies to this kind of methadone use without nearing the danger zone. Throw some xanax or klonopin or valium in the mix and your asking for an overdose. Theres no point in blowin 2 years of your life fighting for your disability benefits . Especially if your gonna go this route! I would ditch mmt all together if your working on disability. Get yourself scripts for short acting narcs for your horrible pain and benzos for psych symptoms (make sure you add a ssri and anti psychotic) and you will be on your way to disability check and happiness!
