long term dope use does it affect your teeth?

so swim get super dry mouth and i hear that can cause teeth problems, but other then that i havent heard of any teeth issues that H causes. many years ago swim was a cocke addict for a couple seasons and after she needed 6-7 fillings. it destroyed swims teeth.

i havent seen in person any teeth destruction caused directly from H, does anyone have any personal stories of such happening?

Re: long term dope use does it affect your teeth?

I've never seen any evidence that links heroin to tooth decay or any other dental problems. If an addict has bad teeth odds are it's because they don't have the money for regular dental checkups and it's possible they are just too busy with their addiction to adhere to any oral hygiene schedule. Flossing kinda goes out the window when you're sick and your guy is giving you five minutes to make the 15 minute drive across town to meet.

Re: long term dope use does it affect your teeth?

I heard that it does cause teeth problems either that or it's the methadone or suboxone... I always, always brushed my teeth after smoking heroin or taking suboxone because it can rot them. I also brush my teeth after smoking speed or ice. In Australia there is a dental scheme that not many people know about; you can get $4000 worth of dental shit done for free over 2 years if you have a chronic illness that is being treated by a doctor and affects your teeth and heroin addiction counts! My bf got it

Re: long term dope use does it affect your teeth?

A dry mouth can damage and cause cavities, so if this is a side effect of heroin use then yes it can cause damage to the teeth, a dry mouth is a haven for bacteria and acids.

Use gum and make brushing a regular habit and you should be fine.

Re: long term dope use does it affect your teeth?

my rattie girl noticed her teeth got much worse when she went on methadone. she felt like it was actually stealing calcium from her bones or something!

she didn't notice this when on H but was an IV user - she thinks smoking it may be different and snorting also because (at least the tar she gets) H seems very acidic to her. In other countries she has heard it is more 'basic' in pH... ??? need to add an acid to get it to break up in the spoon like if you were trying to break down crack.

Re: long term dope use does it affect your teeth?

Started taking Hydrocodone 2004
Started taking Oxycontin and Oxycodone 2006
Started taking Heroin here recently.

In January of this year I had the remaining 21 teeth pulled and replaced with what is called an "All on Four" setup. My back teeth were becoming very fragile and breaking off from time to time and my front teeth were rotting around the gum line. Yes, I did brush my teeth and floss on a regular basis most of the time. Thanks to God and my family my teeth look perfect. Well, I guess they are not really "my" teeth. lol

Re: long term dope use does it affect your teeth?

Heroin's effects directly have nothing to do with dental decay, but poor food intake (specially the lack of fruit and greens) along with bad hygiene, opens room for problems. Street addicts, who live in bad conditions, are prone to those problems. When their bodies are invaded by oportunistic bacteria and viruses - specially of those who use needles - overall oral health tends to suffer as well. With time, the problem only gets worse.
The regular use of heroin, by itself, is not the cause of those problems.
