get a lawyer or not?

My 17 yr old son was caught with cocaine in my car. It was in a cigarette pack (not his) in the console of the car. The cop searched the car because they smelled marijuana. THe cop said if my son admitted that it was his he would not arrest everyone in the car. He admitted it. He went to a detention center and now is on house arrest with the anklet. His court case is June 29. He has no priors. We are going to try and use the court appointed lawyer, due to money issues (not having any). What do you think? This is in Williamsburg, Virginia. Oh another question. He had a drug test and it came out positive and my son is saying that it's positive because he handled it, not snorted. Could that be true? I think he would have to be bathing in it if he didn't use it. Set mom straight. I don't want him to lie to me or to himself. THanks for the advice.
