Glass pipes and screens

SWIM has always smoked out of metal pipes untill now, he buoght a glass pipe yesterday and has no friends that are any more clued up than he is, so i'd like to ask on his behalf: is it true that you don't use metal pipe screens in glass pipes? If so - how does he ensure he dosen't suck a big lump of red-hot bud into his mouth
