Try contacting, Hotel Piet Hein - Amsterdam, directly.
(Cebtrally located, about $80 - $100 USD per night)

-------------------------

Hotel Hampshire Waterland - Purmerend.
North of Amsterdam by about 20 minutes.
It's a golf hotel, and a bit out of the way, but 4-star rating with great reviews and very reasonable price ($60 - $80).

-------------------------

Try cornerhouse hotel cafe. No frills, but good reviews.
(Centrally located $ = ???, but cheap!)

Here is a link to booking agent:

...and I do expect you to return with a report of your visit after providing you with all this information.

This is some great info. Thanks Stbck and Woodman...

I have been considering the exact same question, but for some reason, I never even thought to just ask this community! I did find out that the quest for decent housing and travel advisors is surprisingly difficult to understand. Especially for the person who is a first-time traveler... you never know what you're getting into.

thanks again! -RS

There is a really good cheap hostel right in the centre of 'dam called The Meeting Point Hostel. Only costs $20 or so a night, has a 24hr bar, is 10mins from the central station, 5mins from Dam Square, one street across from the Red Light District and has a bitch load of shroom shops and coffee shops on the same street. I've stayed there twice now and really recommend it for cheapness and great location.

Re: Searching for cheap hotels in amsterdam!!!

There's a really good cheap hotel called The Avenue. It's up the main street opposite central train station. Nice rooms for the price. And you can smoke in the rooms. I think me & the wife paid about £65 per night for a double room.

Re: Searching for cheap hotels in amsterdam!!!

If you are looking for REALLY cheap hotels and are on a bit of a budget, go to Raadhuisstraat (just around the corner from dam sqaure). There are rows upon rows of VERY cheap hotels. These are usually around 20 euros a night, and include a TV, shower and breakfast.

Be prepared to negotiate the usual stairs of death though
